I PICKED UP A POOF!!!! argh!!! ive been waiting almost a year to breed my bettas and when the time comes the males getting beaten up by my females and is swimming for his life!! i tried him with another female and as soon as she flares hes off. she wont nip him though but hes terrified! they were only in for about 2 mins and his fins are torn up a bit. whats the deal??? ive picked up a queer havent i?

Nope Hun,That's just normal betta breeding. I fyou read bettas gone wild,the way Snap & Levi behaved (all lovey dovey) was NOT the standard way. Sometimes bettas are so mean with each other during spawning,that some actually have died. Breeding bettas peacefully,is no easy task!

ive read almost every piece of info about it on the internet now! sounds like my female i tried to breed with him first was vicious because she had already been seasoned and so got a bit nippy when he couldnt deliver the goods and hes a first timer so hes not too sure what to do. now hes scarred for life by her and when i put the relitavely peaceful female in with him he didnt wanna risk being beaten up again! ill give him a week or so to recover and ill try him again. which one should i put in this time? the very ready vicious one or the not so ready not so vicious one? thanks hun

Blinky I think that your post is incredibly homophobic. Fish have a right to live without suffering discrimination due to their sexuality. You should respect your Betta's right to express his sexual preferences in any way he pleases. Maybe rather than trying to convert him to heterosexual practices, you should embrace his sexual diversity. Go buy him a rainbow patterned ornament or a nice young betta boyfriend.....

Amy, next time I would put him in with the more peaceful female. In a case like this - stage fright - its always a better idea to find him a girlfriend that is just a tad smaller than the male. It takes the edge off a little bit. A bigger girl is intimidating to the already shy male.
Another idea, and one that I have tried out a few times, is to get one of those 2 liter soda bottles (empty), cut off the narrow top, fill it up with tank water and put it into the male bettas home. Then put the female inside the soda bottle. That way they both can get used to each other without hurting anyone, and after a while the male might get a little bit friskier.
During that time the male might also start to build his bubble nest, which is a very good sign. That means he is ready.

Blinky, I'm sorry, girl, but the antics involved in betta breeding are some of the funniest I've ever heard. That poor male - he's most likely not a "queer", but rather one of those guys who's just not ready. That aggressive female probably scared the life out of him. I sure laughed myself to tears over this one. Better luck on your next try! Keep us posted!

Hey, blinky! How are things going with your breeding plans? Any luck yet?

well, i put them togteher on sunday night and duke seemed to get the idea that he was in chage and medusa seemed to understand that. they were soooo gentle with each other!! duke threatened to nip medusa but never did. i checked on them yesterday morning, thed obviously finished breeding but there were no eggs. i guess the paternal instincts dont come naturally to poor dukey! ill try again next weekend, see if i get any further. i think theyre getting the hang though
