Ok, Like Selena, I had a hitchiker. The shell is spotted and darkish, spirals on the end., sort of football shapish at this point, its small.
I'm not sure what is a bad snail except those football shaped whatevers I find on pond plants that the koi love to have as a snack.

I plucked it off and found another smaller one and dropped them into a bowl for now until I find out what they are.
Selena
Hmmmmm...sounds like one of these guys that I found (Physa acuta):

Does it look like that? Sometimes when snails are small it's hard to tell. They are easier to identify when they are older smile.gif
Tamianth
Yeah they do sort of resemble that pic. Surprised they survived a week in there, I've got the salt in main tank @ 0.14% The shoulders look more pronounced though, thats another reason I had to ask.
I didnt do a QT as I didn't have any pp on hand and didn't see the little buggers when I inspected the plants either. blink.gif
tinkerbell
i had one of those that came with a plant that i bought! they are so cute!
Dory
sounds like a pond snail(pest) but,if you say that it had more pronounced shoulders then it could be a brig which is a good kind of snail, not a pest kind. any chance of a pic.?
Tamianth
*grins* I took a pic, but he's so small yet zoom doesn't focus in good. But here he is.

We did compare the pic Selena posted to it. My find is way darker, rounder and has more of the mystery snail type shoulders!

Anywho, this was the best I could do for now.

Hamstaboy
hehe you got yourself a physa acuta, i love these guys!!! they lay their eggs underwater and though they are hermaphrodites you need another snail for it to mate with biggrin.gif

or it could be a very small ramshorn, does it have an operculum?
Selena
It looks like a ramshorn snail. There cool. I've got hundreds in my snail bowl. Would you like me to send you some???? hehehehe lol.GIF
Tamianth
LOl! I already have two Rams I just got two weeks ago, and egg's already. Should have some baby's in a few more day's! huh.gif

Those two little snails I found really look like Mystery snails. I'll just let em grow and see what they look like in a few weeks. Maybe they'll be more pronounced and maybe I can get a better pic then too! Hehe!

Hopefully I got lucky and they are truly mystery snails, lol! We'll just cross our fingers and hope for the best! smile.gif

I havn't checked for a operculum, not sure I could actually see one yet, so small and its the bigger of the two! The shell is shapped more like the mystery & Apple snails though. The snail itself appears to be a blue/gray color.
Selena
I hope it's an apple/mystery snail. There cool. What do the eggs look like? If they look like jelly blobs on the side of the tank, there more likely to be ramshorns, but if the eggs look like clutches like these:

...then they are mystery/apple snails.
Tamianth
There Rams alrights, the big ones I just bought, had them 3 day's and they had eggs. The two little guy's I found in my big tank. I cleaned the snail bowl today, put the two little guy's with some water in a plastic container, the littlest one showed up very well in the sun in that and it was a Physa Acuta. The bigger one is way black, with lightish spots, the spiral is a bit offset, there's deffinetly shoulders and the whole shell is more more apple/mystery snail shaped. I still didn't see a operculum though, the opening apears somewhat tear shaped though. But the snail itself looks more blue then grey.

I went over to that applesnail site and looked through those pics too's and none of the physa species seems to fit what I'm seeing at this point.

One thing I have noticed, he seems to like being out of the water mostly and hangs at or above the water line.

The physa went bye bye though.

The baby rams should hatch sometime this next week from what I was told too. smile.gif

Ramesis & Nerfertiti are what I named the rams, one has black stripes with lighter brown/creme markings while the other is brown and creme.
Selena
I think the rams with the stripes are call 'columbians' but dont quote me on that. biggrin.gif

what do you mean when you say "The physa went bye bye though"

Did you just put them in the pond or did he die?

Ramesis & Nerfertiti are cool names, I like them lol.GIF People think I'm a freak naming my snails but I dont care. I love them heartpump.gif

What are you going to do with all the babies Kathy?
Tamianth
Yup, the physa went out to the pond. The darker guy is still inside to grwo some more so I can figure out just what it is..

Well, your not alone, lol! I seem to have to find names for everything too! smile.gif

Well, as for the baby's, I'm going to be setting up my 15 gl after Christmas, I want some of those siamese dolls, and I plan on at least a couple of snails in both tanks. Then this summer, some of the baby's can go to the pond for summer. I also have a good fish store I deal with that does buy sell trade, so they will most likely take some! smile.gif Maybe I can trade for a apple snail or two, lol!

I'll get some pics of Ramesis & Nefertiti and post em up after Christmas, should have some baby's by then too, lol! I finally got enough to posts in to switch things and put my avie up with my name! smile.gif
Selena
Awwww....Mr Chubby & Mr Greedy are gorgeous. The names suit them too lol.GIF
Tamianth
LOL! That they do! Greedy has alway's been the fastest to the dinner bell, while Chubby has alway's been my little baseball with lips & fins!

Well, my little hitch hiker snail is still a mystery at the moment. The rams eggs hatched Christmas though, must be about 40ish of the little guy's crawling around the bowl now, lol!

I'm so glad Koko's is back up and running again! heartpump.gif
