I was cleaning out my apple snail tank last night and noticed a little snail on the plant. I thought it was a ramshorn baby, as I had keeped ramshorns in there before until they started breeding, but when I picked it off the plant it looked like a Physa acuta!!! yikes.gif I took him off the plant straight away and put him in the Ramshorn bowl. I checked the plant over to see if there were anymore but I couldnt see any.

I have found so many stow away snails it's getting out of hand blink.gif

Hamstaman thought in one of the photos I posted, he could see a Physa acuta in the background but is was in fact a baby ramshorn, and now I have found a real Physa acuta ohmy.gif

Does anyone know if you need two Physa acuta snails to lay eggs?? I dont want my apple snails to be in danger if they start infesting my tank.

Should I strip down the tank and get rid of the plant just in case????

you'll need 2 physa... though they are both sex they are not asexual(cant reproduce on own) but there is always a chance that the snail was carrying babies in here, so just in case check the tank for any jelly sacs of eggs lol

JUst inspect the plant carefully.. Do you have fish in the apple snail tank?

I have 5 golden medakas and two danios, but I'm taking them out and giving them to a friend today who has a 50 gallon, because it's too overcrowded. My snail tank is only 20ltrs and I have four apple snails in there.

When I upgrade the tank to a 13 gallon I might put a betta in there with my apple snails. I have always wanted a betta, but my snails are growing very fast so I dont know if 4 apple snails and a betta will be too crowded in a 13 gallon unsure.gif

Selena,
You should be alright with a Betta in the snail tank, they breath not only through there lungs, but have a air sac as well. biggrin.gif

Sometimes when we buy plant's, those little snails are hitch hikers. You can use PP (pertassium permaganent) to treat plant's, like a QT, before you put them in tank. 1/2 tsp. per 10 gl's & submerge the plant completely. Rinse well.
You could also do a desafin & salt dip to uninfest plant's before you put them in the tank.

I never thought of QT'ing a plant, but I think I will from now. Physa acuta hurt apple snails, so I was freaking out. krazy.gif

I now have a Ramshorn City in a fish bowl, with stowaways and offspring. I dont know what to do with them. I tried to give some to my GF but they just spit them out unsure.gif

Yeah, I havn't even had my two rams a week and I have egg's in the bowl! Luckily I have koi & pond and I'm pretty sure they will eat some of them. Its recomended that plants get a QT with koi, mostly because those pots sit in ponds with fish and could possibly harbor parasites as well as snails. biggrin.gif
Another thing that can be used to de-infest plants is granular chlorine, though I'm not sure how much one would need to use on that. Formalin should also do the job.
