Flashing is where the fish are trying to scrape themselves against things. They'll probably dart around the tank somewhat, and then dive into the gravel or against an ornament\decoration. Kinda like if a dog has an itch they can't reach, where they're leaning down to rub against the floor or ground.

They dart around so fast that they "flash" their silver underbellies.

Best wishes,

Both answers above are potentially correct. A third possible answer has to do with males flashing their colours at potential mates. I hear it can be a spectacular event with rainbowfish on a sunny morning.

So, I think we're missing the context Lisa. Can you give us some more info?

A-ha! I think I just read the context in lionheadfancier's sad post about ulcers. So, Dj n Lady get the prize!

Oh,
my black moor at times has sort of changed directions quite fast and someone had mentioned "flashing", possible Ph problem or a parasite problem. I just wanted to confirm what flashing was. I treated Wasabi for 5 days with Maracyn for a potential (still not sure if it was anything but it's gone) fungus problem. I noticed yesterday he darted around for a short time but didn't rub up against anything. I don't know if anything is wrong?? He is eating fine and seems healthy (The tank is still cycling and the nitrites are not 0 however.

thats the other thing that will make them Flash. PH level and Nitrites and ammonia, the Irritation of the skin will make them do it One way to look at flashing in a very easy way. Flashing is like when you have an ich and you scratch it, when since goldfish don't have hands to do this they will rub them self and move very fast to try to scratch that ich, some times its just an irritation or its something thats bitting them

thanks. I suspect it is the nitrites. I guess I just have to wait for them to lower... The tank was set up 3 weeks ago.

ummm. I din't know if my nitrite test is the same as those in the States. (Mine is Hagan brand) in Canada. Oh, I don't have it home with me to check now. The colour of the test tube of water turns out a light-medium pink (if that means anything to anyone who has the same test) and I believe the value is 0.8 . The water when tested seems to be getting lighter pink which is a good sign. I didn't have a problem with ammonia the last test I did (practically 0) . I've never tested Ph or nitrates. I hope over the next few weeks the tank finishes cycling.
