I was searching the net to find out how big apple snails can get, and I came across this:

Giant Snail

Pretty big snail!! huh.gif

Does anyone here know how big apple snails can get, I havent found that info yet? I looked on applesnail.net but couldnt find anything sad.gif

That's a big snail! He could eat my hamster for dinner!

There are many different kinds of apple snails. The most common ones are brigs and canas: Canas can get as big as baseballs, and brigs stay much smaller, maybe the size of a ping pong ball. If your snail eats plants, chances are that it's a cana. Loads of info on applesnail.net, you just have to look!

How big do the Golden Apple Snail, Pomacea bridgesii get. I think I have that type of snail unsure.gif Does anyone know? huh.gif

Hey Selena,

"Brig" is the shortform name for Pomacea Bridgesii (and "cana" is the shortform for pomacea cananiculata) And they get around ping-pong ball size, like I mentioned in my last post.
hamstaman
usually ping pong can get up to baseball/tennis ball size:D

Those snails are actually illegal in the US (I think..). I KNOW they are illegal in a lot of states (because they destroy crops) but I'm not sure about the whole country.

My biggest brig is a bit larger than a golf ball.
hamstaman
canniculatas grow much larger then brigs.... even though they are still apple snails

i think insalurams are the largest apple snails:o not sure tho lol

Apple snails are illegal in most places inculding Australia and America. We have them in Australia becuase they were illegally imported a few years ago and started popping up in aqauriums before the authorities even knew about it. They havent had a crack down on apple snails here as they have in some states in the U.S as yet, but they are doing extensive research on the effect of apple snails in the Australian enviroment at the moment.

Wasn't Airwen talking about the huge snail in the link? They are African land snails, and they sure are illegal in Ontario... we had over 100 confiscated from the store a few months back. They destroy crops like no other, and they reproduce like mad, like a plague...

How could a Cana destroy crops? It needs a really moist environment... I mean, I know they can breathe air, and all, but are they really illegal in some places?
Selena
In Australia & Asia they destroy rice crops which are grown in water. In Australia our rice industry is worth over 5 million dollars+ a year, so they are a bit concerned about the introduction of all species of apple snails to Australia huh.gif
leo
I can see why their worried wink.gif
squeeker
huh.gif Wow, all from a pretty little apple snail. Who'd have guessed?
airwen
That happens with regular introduced Brigs in Hawaii (and other places) too, they eat the rice crops.

Some apple snails are illegal in some places but the rules are pretty sketchy on this.

If apple snails were illegal in my state...I'd be in jail for life! rofl3.gif
