What kind of plants make good floating plants? I'd like to put some plants in my 40 gallon that will float at the top but sort of hang down into the water.. sort of like breeding mops, which I can find no where in this town.

The only ones I really know are hornwort and wisteria. Both of them have broad leaves that float at the surface with roots hanging down in the water. They self propagate and when they get large enough you can just plant them. I originally bought some for my own tanks... In one I was feeding floating pellets (at the time) and the goldfishies thought it was a REAL nice treat to eat. In my other tank the snails found it and ate them. Also, those plants can get easily trapped in your filter, so make sure there is a calm corner for them to hang out in.

They may be hard to find. Most pet stores sell plants that come as a big seperate rooted plant, not a bunch of little ones. You may have to shop around.

Cheers!
