Since moving into their new tank, my two fantail/ryukin/mutts have become plant eating machines!

We planted up the tank with two healthy clumps of plant- I don't know what it's called but it looks sort of like lush grass, basically just long green ribbons. which were well buried in the gravel.

I feed my goldies well, but they seem to enjoy snacking on the plant as well, every few hours I find another couple of strands floating round. What's worse is that I come down in the morning to find that they have dug up the plants and shifted them across the aquarium!

I've replanted them for the second time today, and weighted them down with some quartz and slate pebbles, in the hope that they will stay put. Is there anything else I can try, or any plant that's a little more hardy, or do I have to accept that my fish are vandals and any greenery will be consumed rapidly?

My fish tend to nibble on all my plants except for my banana lillies which are thriving. Dataguru included this link which I really found helpful about plants in a previous post:

Plants

What would this forum do without Dataguru? heartpump.gif lol.GIF We would all be hopelessly lost biggrin.gif **(((hugs))) for Dataguru**

Same thing here. Darn lil vandals. They love nibbling at it no matter how much you feed them. My trick is, put those plants in a certain way that your fish would find a hard time eatin them. Put them behind an ornament or in a corner or sumthin.

biggrin.gif I just did a tip of the month on how to help keep your plants from floating-you may want to take a look at that. I'll tell you the truth, the only plants so far that my goldies seem to leave alone has been Anibias, and different crypts that I have. I just read on that plant link that swords were a good plant to use,but in my tank, all my swords are half-way to being just stems!!!! blink.gif Anacheris is really cheap, and easy to grow. I buy a huge amount-that way the goldies have something to nibble on,and I still have some type of plants! lol.GIF Oh yea, somewhere it says that Mexican Oak Leaf was good....Between the plant and shipping,it cost me almost 10.00--My goldies had it devoured before I turned their tank light out that nite!!! Go figure!!!

Thanks for the suggestions folks.

I've just extracted the chewed remains of my prized plants from the aquarium. Calliope destroyed them in front of my eyes, and I swear she was smirking as she did it!

I'll be investing in some plastic plants in the next week or so, and will go to a different LFS to see what their suggestions are for goldfish proof plants, as the advice from the last one was...unhelpful

Try baopa's. Fish don't like to chew on them and they look great. The great thing with plants is that they use your fish's poop as fertilizer and takes out some ammonia from your water. Correct me if i'm wrong.
