Does anyone here make their own snail food? I have a couple of recipes from applesnail.net but was wondering if anyone here has a recipe they recommend. I cant get calcium liquid so I need to feed them a high calcium diet. I put some cuttle shell in the filter to make up for it but figure a high calcium diet is more effective. One of my applesnails has a dent in it's shell sad.gif

im making some today...

im putting some:

apple
carrot
lettuce
spinach
cabage
parsley
grapes
pears
3 eggs with the shells
a cup of cream of wheat

then i just stir that up till its thick and not too milky... put clumps on a cookie sheet in an oven heated at 350 degrees for 15 minutes until the have a hard outside...

smile.gif... the eggs and some of the veggies give the needed calcium... if you'd like you could add cuttlebone and fish food to the mixture or any otehr veggies and fruits laying around!

Thanks for the info smile.gif Some people on applesnail.net suggest using calcium powder in the food as well. My lfs sell Reptile Calcium powder so I guess I could use that. People also suggest to put in reptile vitamins or multi vitamins? Is it safe and how much should I put in? What human vitamins are safe to put in the food?

Sorry about all the questions unsure.gif

i think reptile vitamins are ok... but you only need reptile vitamins if they have added calcium... but reptile calcium is real good as well probably better... im not sure how much you would add in... i would add what you think is "necessary" i doubt you can over dose calcium in a treat for snails! lol

there are some human calcium vitamins i think people use.. but dont quote me on that.. i think i once saw people using calcium tablets but they were strictly calcium tablets for their snials.... you'll need to ask the snail forum to be sure

no prob.. i liek answerin q's looooool

Selena:

I think that there is a list somewhere on applesnail.net that lists the calcium content of all types of foods you could add to your snail food. I would use the amount of vitamins that the people on there use to be safe. I wouldn't use human vitamins, I would imagine they would be way to concentrated for snails. I don't know if the vitamins are really necessary as long as you use a variety of things in your snail food.

Some recipes also use dog biscuits, I believe...

I use Maria's snail biscuits. Not sure if her site is back up yet or not. My snails really seem to like them. I have two kinds--fruit and vegetable. They seem to like the veggie ones best. smile.gif

Best of luck with your project!
