I'm new to owning fish and after waiting one month for the bulbs I put in to grow, I went ahead and bought a live plant from my lfs last night. First I put it in the tank still in its basket. Then I took it out of the basket and tried to place it on the bottom of the tank underneath the gravel, but when I woke up this morning, the plants had 'migrated' over to another part of the tank. So this morning I put the plant back into tis basket and tried to place it into the bottom of the tank again. But right now my plant is floting at the top of the tank. What should I do?

my goldfish like to uproot plants to eat the roots, and you can cut down on that a little by putting a couple river rocks or gravel around the plants but the fish or goin' to keep on uprooting my plants no matter what i do.

Those darn goldies........ I had the same problem with alot of stem plants floating all the time. I actually bought these cute little votive type glasses-stuck the plant stems in them, and then filled them with gravel/rocks to hold them in.I occasionly still get a floaty plant here and there, but most of my plants have been staying on bottom now. (By the way...I didn't say that the goldies quit eating my swordplants, did I? Because they still enjoy them---just at a lower level!!!!

Devs--Do you think a person could use empty baby food jars as pots for plants? Is the neck to small for water movement?

I had the same problem with my anacharis the fish would uproot them every day. I bought some plastic mesh for.24. cents at a craft store and stuck the stems into it and they have been staying, and its nice because you can cut the mesh into neat patterns to arrange the plants. I also had a problem with my sword it was a potted plant and had big roots so I got a votive just like the one in Dev's picture for about 45 cents at nnnnnn And stacked river rocks on top. The plants have all stayed in place so far. Good luck!
