I built a garden pond approx 30 Months ago. I had quiet a few casualties with goldfish in the beginning due to fungus and Herons. The pond is now very healthy looking with a very strong weed growth and the water has been chrystal clear all year. This week I noticed approx 10 fry in the pond. They vary in size from approx 5mm to 10mm. At this stage I believe there are two mature goldfish and one KOI carp living in the pond. The goldfish and KOI have survived for just over 18Months. My knowledge of keeping fish is minimal, I couldn't even tell what species of goldfish, or Koi are in the pond.

Question is,

any idea which fish produced the fry.?

Considering how cold the weather is at present, we had frost last week, what's the likelyhood of these fry surviving?

What can I do to ensure they survive?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

you cant really tell 'who dunnit' until after the fry get their colour or at least when they grow a lot more. id take them out if you can. theyll either get eaten by the parents or die from the cold. you might find this topic helpful of what to do with them smile.gif

You can leave them in or take them out. I have two ponds. One for the big fish and one for the fry. But there are lots of fry in the big fish pond too. They hide and survive. I keep a stock tank heater in my pond but only use it when the water starts freezing solid on the top. How deep is your pond and how many gallons?

An old method is to take the mother and father fish out along with others. Pretty un-economical but it's still one of the best methods.
