I went to the local pet shop today and couldnt find oyster shells. They had another type of shell grit:

It says on the packet: Assists in crop digestion, bone health and calcium that may lack in egg shell development

Is this ok to use if I cant get oyster shells?

I wasnt sure if I can use this shell grit so i bought another bag which had crushed shells. Could i use that instead or both?

sorry about all the questions rolleyes.gif

I use crushed coral and it works just fine! Rinse it before using. I imagine that is what you have, because it is commonly used instead of gravel in salt water tanks to buffer the water. Crushed coral normally has some crushed shells (and whole tiny shells) in it. I put my crushed coral in the media basket of my filter (in a piece of pantyhose) because I have river rock on my tank bottom and don't want to create a mess.

You can also use Kent's Liquid Calcium instead.

I might go to another pet shop and see if they have crused coral. I rinsed the shell grit and some eggs and put it in a corner filter. I hope that helps with the calcium levels. I'm thinking I should just go to the seafood shop and buy a couple of oysters, rinse them and crush them (???)

You could do that, but really, not necessary. I'm sure what you are doing now is fine!

The Kent's liquid calcium is much easier though!

Are you snail's shells in good shape now, or are you having problems with shell deterioration?

Hi laura!

thank you for replying biggrin.gif my ramshon snails have white marks on the shell, which I read, means the water to too acidic and eating it away, so i have raised my ph level and put the corner filter in there with the shell grit and eggshells. I cant get liquid calclium at my local pet store sad.gif I might get my husband to drive me to another one today to have a look. I would rather use liquid calcium becuase the corner filter is taking up too much room unsure.gif
