Paul,

What kind of meds did you have in mind? LSF-type things for external problems/parasites like fungus, ich etc, or internal bacterial infection type meds (did you wanted brandnames as well)? Stuff for emergencies? I was looking around terribly for internal medication before, and realise that we don't have useful meds (from what I hear from you guys in the states) like kanacyn, maracyn here that I could find. Instead, the only antibiotic type stuff I found was: tetracycline, flagyl/metronidazole (supposed to be prescribed, but the lsf had it anyway). There's also this spectrum thera A+ antibiotic. But I really thought that these 3 medications didn't *really* help for serious internal problems. I wish we have medigold here blink.gif

PS: if you need a more detailed list, let me know and I can scan through our lsfs for you. If li'l Canberra has it....other states here are bound to have it biggrin.gif

That an excellent idea, Paul. The only problem for us (in Australia) is that both range and options are very patchy and unpredicable. I have seen some meds in one "local" little aquarium but not available in larger chain stores. If I quote those, how would other people know where to get them?
captk
OBTW, NZ is now run by Kiwi's. Don't mention the British. wink.gif
Devs
biggrin.gif Wow Sandy! Very thorough!!! Paul may have to dedicate a chapter just for you Scots!!! lol.GIF
toothless
i knew youd be along to help, kat. thank you. smile.gif

thanks captk, i forgot about that transer of power. ill keep that in mind. also, i think what ill do as far as availability goes is type a litte paragraph explaining some tips on how to locate these meds via the internet. search engines are usually pretty good at locating sources for pretty much anything thats available. also, ill be suggesting that ordering from online sources be tries as well. biggrin.gif

as for the meds that you guys have listed thus far, thank you very much. i too have found a few very good sources for meds in australia (mostly online catologues). i did some searching last night and found an awesome website. maybe it would be a good idea to start ordering meds from there (online). the site is: aquaria.com theyve got a pretty good list of meds there.

ive discovered one of the reasons its so hard to find meds in australia that actually work. there is no law from keeping manufacturers from claiming that their meds treat things that it doesnt. basically, they can make a questionable product and then package it in a bottle thats says it treats this or that, even if its known to be the equivelent to snake oil. knowing this, its not hard to understand why fishkeepers in australia have such a hard time finding meds that actually do what it says it does. i feel for you guys.

anyway, my list for australia is growing pretty fast so, ill be putting that list together this weekend and it should be posted by saturday or sunday. after that, ill concentrate on the uk and the other countries. it might take some time, but when im done, well hae a good comprehensive list of whats available for everyone.

keep those product names coming guys. if you can, list the name of the product and its ingredients.

paul
podded_pea
Sands -> you should get that pinned on the Uk board smile.gif
kat
Ah we have things like sterazin, melafix and pimafix etc here too if you're interested, I suppose they're the important ones smile.gif Paul, did you find out that the online US companies will ship (certain) medications/chemicals to Australia? I found out that medigold and medikoi sellers in the US don't (of course). I think inter-state medications might be easier (it's going to be interesting to post tablets across though biggrin.gif ).

I'm also interested to know if any australians have found cycling-bacteria type products around. I've used Cycle and Bio Super (local product by Biotec that claims it has the highest bacteria count) without avail (although we do have Prime & Amrite that I haven't tried yet). Hmm....this does come under medication right? biggrin.gif
captk
Thanks, Paul, for keep an eye out for us poor Aussies. smile.gif

Kat, I think a lot of those bio-bug thingies are pretty close to snake oil. I've used biofilter booster type products for the pond and cycle for the tank and if it made any difference, it was barely detectable.

I spoke to a small aquarium operator who has a good stock of the more old fashion meds and his comments were the Australian govt cannot make up their minds about a lot of overseas products, whether they are fit for human consumption i.e. treating food fish or straight pet care products. So in the end, they just put them into the too-hard basket and refuse to classify them and hence no importation. sad.gif

I would love to get my hands on medigold or Tricide Neo.
toothless
hi kat, actually, any kinds of drugs that are used to treat fish and marine life will do, no matter what. if youve got info on the effectiveness of any of them, adding a few words on them would certainly help. as far as us cmpanies shipping to australia, im not sure. but, ive found online companies that are from australia that take credit card orders and will ship out to all four corners of australia. heres one of them i found thus far: aquaria.com

heres my list for australia i have so far:

quick cure
Aquachem Parasol
Para-cide Tabs - Aquamaster
Aquamaster White Spot Remedy

Geo Liquid Tropical
New Life, Spectrum- Thera A
Wardley's Triple sulpha 12 Tab
Waterlife Myxazin
Waterlife Octozin
Waterlife Protozin
Waterlife Sterazin

as you can see, this list is getting up ther in numbers. ill be having my hands full as far as finding the ingredients in each of these drugs. any help there would be greatly appreciated. tomorrow, when i start putting it all together for posting, ill make sure to let everyone know to give a little input as to the effectiveness they experienced. this way, we can weed out the snake oils that are undoubtedly on this list.

one good thing that i noticed, it seems that you guys have several american products that are importd and sold over there. i was pleased to find some furan based products there. hopefully with a little more research, we can find a med that you can actually make your own medicated foods from. i know its there, we just gotta find it. wink.gif

anyway, im tired and i need to rest my weary eyes for the night, see you all tomorrow! smile.gif
Fishmerised
That's great work Toothless, must have taken you ages. exactly.gif

I raided my medicine cabinet so I'll let you know what I use, I don't really have much.

Aquarium Science (Australian Company)

Goldfish Conditioning Salts - sodium chloride, magneseum sulphate, calcium sulphate, potassium chloride, strontium chloride, potassium bromide, sodium biphoshate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium thiosulphate, acriflavine. Slightly increases pH and salinity, I used this product all the time as a general tonic.

Fungus & Finrot Remedy - acriflavine, malachite green. I have found this product works.

Waterlife (UK)

Protozin - ingredients not listed, not listed on website either. Treats whitespot, velvet, costiasis, trichodiniasis, neon tetra disease and fungus. I have found this product works.

Aqua Master - Aristopet (Australian Company)

Rapid White Spot Remedy - formaldehyde, malachite green. I have found this product works.

Algae Cure - simazine. This product works and is safe in my experience. It is not a quick cure but takes several weeks to see results.

Aquarium Pharaceuticals - (US)

Bettafix - Cajeput. I have found this products works.

Melafix - Cajeput. I have found this product works.

Primafix - pimenta racemosa. Limited success on its own, works better when used with Melafix.

Well, that's all I have Paul. I would be interested to know if there are any products available here that are similar to Marcyn and Marcyn 2.
toothless
thanks annette! biggrin.gif

as for the maracyn products, because the meds found in them are also found in some prescribed meds for humans, i doubt that they can easily classify them for sale there. im not positive though. unsure.gif
toothless
i didnt notice this before but, you guys can get a form of the same ingredient as found in maracyn 1. its called e.m tablets. theyre made by aquarium pharmaceuticals and according to the sources ive found, they should legal throughout australia. i know that the e.m tablets are mainly for external infections. but, if i remember correctly, i read a page a while back that tells you how to make your own medicated food using erythromycin. not too sure though. ill have to look into that again and post my findings.

paul
toothless
ok. got the page up and running. ive still got waterlife and aquasonic and a couple other brands to investigate. ill finish up with all i have tomorrow and then ill be able to start on the uk list.

lemme know what you think. huh.gif

paul
captk
Thanks, Paul. We appreciate all the work you have put into this. biggrin.gif
Fishmerised
Ok, dumb question - where did you post the page?
toothless
sorry, its in the treatment forum. its pinned at the top.

heres a link: australian medications list

ill be adding more tonight....... biggrin.gif
captk
Ol' wise and kind Paul, can you tell me how to make medicated food with EM tablets? Pretty please . . smile.gif
DataGuru
You could use gel food to deliver the EM. You'd just have to know the therapeutic dose, how much they eat per day and then figure out how how much EM to add to the batch of medicated gel. You'd probably want to add the EM the the gel after it's cooled down to prevent the heat from messing with the potency of the drug.

EM wouldn't be my drug of choice because of this from the Univ of Fla extension service:
QUOTE
Erythromycin is most effective against gram-positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus species. The vast majority of bacteria that cause disease in fish are gram-negative

They have a table of doses and recommend dosing 1.5 grams of EM per pound of food.
captk
Thanks Betty for the info. The other antibiotic that I think is still available is Furan2 which overs both gram pos and neg so maybe I should try that instead.

Cheers!
toothless
not necessarily wise, i just care so much that it bleeds over into a drive to help others. wink.gif

thanks for the link, betty! and thats a good point as far as succeptabilities are concerned. but, being that australias list of antibiotics are slim to none, theyve not got much to work with as it is.

im not sure if its safe to feed goldies furan compounds. i suppose that it would be just like erythromycin in that youd have to know how much to add to the food as per their weight and diet. ill see what i can find there. who knows, maybe even combining the two would be better than either one alone. i wouldnt do that unless i was absolutely sure though.

anyway, ive only got one more company to add to the aussie page so far, waterlife. after i add them, any new findings or ingredients for the ones that are marked "unkown" would be a great help! lemme know and ill add it to the list! biggrin.gif

also, id like to add links to some of the better online sources for australia, if you know some, lemme have it and ill check it out.

thanks guys B)

paul
captk
Well, Paul, you are wise in my book! wink.gif

I still couldn't find the link "australian medications".
toothless
is it not in the treatment section? unsure.gif

hopefully this link will work for you:

australian medications list

if it doesnt work or you cant see it in the treatment forum, i might have to go and make it visible or something. im still pretty clueless when it comes to doing things with the board. pm me and let me know if its still giving you probs.

can anyone else see it yet? huh.gif
toothless
ok, i figured out what i did wrong and i fixed it. biggrin.gif

sorry about that guys! rolleyes.gif
Fishmerised
Thanks Paul I see it now. smile.gif
toothless
I've got the UK page up and going now! biggrin.gif

if anyone knows any of the missing ingredients, please let me know and ill put them in pronto..... wink.gif

heres another link: International Medication Availability

thanks lol.GIF

Do you need Canadian info? I can get that from work for ya if you wish...
JessicaandMarshall
I think most of what we can get in Canada, you can also get in the US so our lists would probably be quite similar.

However, I think the content of some of our meds may be a bit different. Didn't our Pimafix's have different content or label or something, I think I remember comparing them.

This is a really good idea, and must be a lot of work for you.

Jessica
sandy
just found out that waterlife have brought out a new med called medizin P.

it says it treats parasitic infestations such as white spot, velvet, costia, trichodina and cryptobia. and also treats fungal infections. once again no ingredients.
sandy
i emailed waterlife asking why they didnt list the ingredients on the packet. this was the reply i got.

Dear Sandra,

Thank you for your email.

Most manufacturers guard their formulations with their life as they have built their business with this intellectual property. Having developed your own formulations (costing thousands of pounds over many years) you obviously do not wish to create plagiarism by listing your ingredients.
Some products do carry formulations, perhaps one or two, but rarely have I seen a full list on any product. Providing their are no requirements to do so, then you will probably not see anything on product packaging in this respect.
This is also true outside of the aquatic market, where household products just state - ionic / anionic surfactants. This is a huge group of chemicals and tells you little to nothing about the product itself.

I hope the above has been of help.

Yours sincerely,

Alex Cox.
toothless
Heh! what a crock of poo!

So let me get this straight:

They are manufacturing "medications" intended for use on very well loved pets. These medications are known to be poisons and can cause severe adverse reactions if not used properly. To use a product properly, it takes a general understanding of how the ingredients work (ie. malachite green and deactivation by light and formalin being really bad if used in cold water, etc.) Not to mention catfish being very sensitive to most medications.

Hmmmm. Sounds kinda like a used car salesmen not wanting to disclose the maintenence history of a car they're trying to sell because it would deter people from wanting to buy it. <_<

Heres another parallel:

Lets say i were to get a spinal injury that left me in considerable pain and i decided to try a new medication that was called "pain B-gone". Now this medication didnt have an ingredients list and i was told to "trust them" and take it. Then i wind up in the hospital on my deathbed because they have proprietary information that it contained codeine in it. The whole time, i knew i was allergic to it but because they didnt have it listed as an ingredient, I didnt know to be wary of it.

Sounds like a crock, doesn't it?

Sounds to me like waterlife is around for nothing more than to make as much money as possible and that the needs and worries of their own customers arent nearly as important as the almighty dollar/yen/lire/euro. Besides, I can gaurantee you that not a single med on their list is actually something original that they came up with theirselves. Just like soooo many other foreign companies, they probably just copy the ingredients from other more well known companies and package it with another name. Heck, without an active ingredients list, they can make all sorts of exorbitant claims about the products uses.

Needless to say, i feel very strongly about this.
toothless
Oh yeah, i almost forgot:

The next list I'll be working on is for Canada. Any additions to this list would be greatly appreciated wink.gif If you can, list the ingredients too! biggrin.gif

Squeeker,

definitely, gimme watcha got! You can PM me the info or just post it here!

Thanks for the offer! biggrin.gif

Toothless, I just saw the treatment thread and I am speechless. Literally....

here's a small me's contribution from Holland. I have tried but feel very humble against stalwarts on this thread. I do not know the english names for some of the dutch words....

HS Camacell- Diflubenzuron (12.5mg), Pyrantheltartrate(341mg), Flubendazol(17.6mg) composition per tablet for 50 litres. against Nematodes (threadworm), cestoden (tapeworms), monogenic Trematodes, gill and skin flukes and Diplozoon. Claims not to effect bio filter but hard to believe.

HS Flexicell- Broadbased anti-bacterial disinfecting medium. No composition given.
HS Fungicell- Methylthioniumchloride(2.5mg), Acriflavine(5.0mg), Hexamethylenparorosanilinchloride(0.04mg) per ml. For fungal infections as secondary treatment
HS Ichtocell- 1 ml has Malachitegreenoxalate(6.0mg), Acriflavine(2.0mg), Hexamethylenparorosanilinchloride(0.5mg), Methylthioniumchloride(0.6mg). For Ich, Chilodonella, and Trochodina. I have tried this. Is good. filter goes for toss.
HS Spirocell- Per tablet composition : 2-amino-5-nitro-thiazol-(220.5mg), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, Cupric Disodium salt(31.5mg) . For Hole in head, Black Stripe,, trypanosoma (sleep disorder), Protopalina.
HS Unicell - Acriflavine 12.6 mg, Hexamethylenparorosanilinchloride.05mg. Infections by Flexibacter columnaris, Trichodina, Chilodonella. All gram -ve bacteria. I tried this for finrot. needed repeat doses. Didnt work for me. I got secondary fungus during 2nd round of treatment. Just persisted. had to finish finally with Myxazin.

Water conditioners: No compositions available for these
HS Clear Z- Clears cloudy water
HS Cupracell- Cupric based algicide
HS Cyanocell- Against Cyanophytes, blue algae
HS Gastrocell - Against Planaria.
HS Bacto-Z- Start up culture- has 10 varieties for bacteria. Nitrosomonas europea, Nitrobacter winogradskyi, Bacillus aminovorans, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus azotoformans, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformans, Bacillus pantothenticus, Paracoccus denitrificans, Pseudomonas stuzerii, Thiobacillus versutus. I have found this quite effective.
I used this alongwith COLOMBO's Bactuur Nitrex for removing nitrite.

SERA
Sera never gives its composiiton. Bad guys. Makes it very difficult for me each time I want to buy and cross check the parent compounds. May be I will try writing to them like Sandy....hers's the list for what it's worth...

Sera oodinopur - Oodinium
Costapur - ich, costia, Chilodonella, trichodina
Mycopur - for skin and gill fluukes,
Baktopur - Finrot, ulcers
Schneckopur- Snail, Hydra, discworm
Ectopur for ectoparasites as support treatment.

Water conditioners
toxivec- removes NH3, NO2, stabilises PH/KH, removes high NO3, neutralises chloramines, and something else in german which I think means removes toxic heavy metals, compounds. I use this and it helped me once from NO2 poisoning.
Ammovec- prevents Nh3 and nitrite problems

I had once bacterial culture from Aquarium Munster: Aquavital Nitrigon 1. I used it for start up after the soap crash. No names again. Now I have Tetra Bactozym. Again no names.

Sera is a bit more reputed here than HS. But my LFS stocks only HS so I have experience with it. Sera has test kits also, cheaper but my LFS says Tetra is more accurate and best for test kits. I have seen some stuff from eSHa also. I will check in the next few days from my other pet shop. This is all from me till then. Hope it helps... smile.gif
Vandana
goldies
I forgot to add Tetra's GoldOomed that I have for broadrange bacterial infections. It has malachitegreenoxalate and formalin.
toothless
Goldies,

Thank you very much for your contribution! You've definitely helped very much. Some of these companies may also be found in other countries as well and it's always good to have a stronger database of info. Everything is very understandable and it shouldn't take much time to transfer it over into the medications list.

Again, Thank You!!!! biggrin.gif

Paul
Yolanda
Hi Paul,

I'll try to get a list of New Zealand meds together for you, but it may take me a while as I'm pretty busy at the moment.

To start with, we have Furan 2 (found that one out too late sad.gif), melafix, and various products with malachite green. Like Aus and the UK (which we haven't been ruled by for bloody years BTW!!), a lot of things have absolutely no details as to what is actually in them.

I'll start doing some more investigating in a few weeks...

Don't know if this helps but king british fungus and fin rot (no 6 i think) and interpet anti fungus and fin rot no 8 both have active ingrediant of phenoxyethanol.

no concentrations or anything but the king british one treats more gallons of water from the same size bottle and was the same price, i haven't used it yet but will let you know how i get on if/when i do.

Rachel
toothless
I've done a little research and it seems that Phenoxyethenol is mainly used as an antifungal AND as an anesthetic for fish. It seems that short immersion in a high concentration causes surgical anesthesia in many fish and is widely used as such. Soooo, don't be surprised if you see your goldie falling asleep on you a bit........... wink.gif
Rachelm
I saw that when i was looking up some info about it, still hoping i won't have to use it as the salt seems to be working quite well. scary stuff.
