I've made gel food once, and it didn't turn out well since I was substituting stuff. One thing I noticed though is that it made the water very cloudy. Is this normal? Or was it just because I screwed it up?

The gel food I just made had no effect on the water. Maybe you put too much in at one time. I did notice that if I accidentally squished the piece a little bit that it would kind of break up in the water. So that could cause your cloudiness, just little bits of the food floating around. But I would assume that the combination of your fish and filter that the cloudiness shouldn't last that long. Sorry. Don't really know. That's just my experience.

I haven't noticed any cloudiness.
Small bits of food do scatter from my gel, but I'm sure the ramshorn snails and goldies polish off every bit.
I feed my tropicals gel as well. I squish it up into small bits and don't notice that clouding up the water.

No you smartbutt, I didn't use enough jello, and it wasn't "gel food". It was nasty.

Do you still have it? If you do try to freeze it and feed it that way - might work....

Nah, I dumped it a long time ago. I'll have to "re-attempt" it again.

I have noticed that many fresh vege's make a bit of a mess. The cleanest one I've used is peas. No waste.

wet foods are a bit messy compared to pellets. it used to make my water cloudy but that was because i was putting too much in at the one time. now i only put a little bit at a time so they eat all the food i put in.

nothing is left at the bottom of the tank to foul the water

It sounds as if perhaps you didn't use enough gelatin. When you try again, use more gelatin this time. So it won't be so messy and will hold together better when you put it in the tank. I also just cut up a few bite size pieces and put them in the tank. Just enough for my fish to eat in a minute or so.

Oh, I KNOW I didn't use enough! Thanks! Now I'm wanting to try it again. Maybe I'll go to the store......................
