How did the salmon work. Last time I tried it, it made the gel food kinda gressy unsure.gif
Chrissy_Bee
I made some gel food last night and FINALLY had success biggrin.gif
I actually wanted to make it for my turtle so he can get more fruit/veggies, but I gave a little to my fish this morning and they loved it.

Here's the recipe I used

carrot & pea baby food (1 jar)
apple, strawberry & banana baby food (1 jar)
spirulina pellets
blood worms
salmon (I had some for supper and cut a chunk off, mashed it up and mixed it in tongue.gif)
2 packs geletin

Here's the mixture, it actually smelled good thanks to the baby food!!

I did as I've seen suggested here and put it all in a pot on the stove, then added the geletin directly to that. It worked like a charm, here are the results

And koko, the salmon didn't seem to make it greasy. I had cooked it well before so it was kind of dry, maybe that helped.

koko
How did you cook the Salmon hun...cause mine will get oil on it when I cook? sad.gif
Chrissy_Bee
It was a fillet I bought fresh and then frozen. I defrosted it in the microwave and the edges were dried out so I used them (yes, I put evil microwaved food in my gel food unsure.gif )
Then I mashed it up with a fork and put it in the mixture.
koko
So did you bake it...cause thats what I did last time...Or was it Rare
Chrissy_Bee
I just microwaved it....again... unsure.gif
But maybe the key is to overbake it so it really dries out?

That's what I was thinking. Overcook it so that it really dries out. One, fish don't care if the fish is overcooked and two, it's gonna get all rehydrated with all the other stuff it's mixed with anyway. And, if there's skin on the fish, make sure to take that off before cooking because that's where a great deal of the fat comes from.
koko
Well that will explain why mine got gressy...Left the skin on ohmy.gif

I'm trying to think of what I have on hand to use...

pellet food
algea wafers
frozen bloodworms
frozen brine shrimp
freeze dried brine shrimp
flake food
tadpole pellets

I also have some Georgia Collards, Garlic Chives, and Okinawa Spinach, would these be safe for the goldies? Okinawa Spinach is lower than normal spinach in that acid stuff that someone said was bad.

Anyone know a recipe for faster growth?

is it safe to the eyes of the salmon or tuna into the gel food? My supermarket only sells whole fish. Also, is it OK to put the skin into the gel food mix because I'm only 12 and I don't know how to remove it.
Chrissy_Bee
They eyes?? I doubt they'd hurt, but I don't there's a need for that. If the fish is thawed you can pull the skin off pretty easily. But the best thing to do is to cut the meat off, you don't want bones and stuff like that in there. Can an adult help you out?
KoiFan
Yes, an adult can help me out but he is busy with work and stuff so i have to do it myself.
Chrissy_Bee
I'd wait if I were you, you can freeze the fish until you're ready to cut it up smile.gif

I've noticed that my gel food tends to give at least one of my fish stringy poo, think that there's too much gel/water, not enough substance?

Gel food does not have to use fresh meat/fish in the recipe. You can use fresh veggies with pelleted food, flaked food, floating food, etc. All are tossed into the veggie cooking pot for the last few minutes after it comes off the heat - they soak up the water and soften - and become sinking.

This is a way to use up your floating food, flake food, pelleted food that causes some fish to be floaty.

I you really wish to put tuna or some such fish in the gel food, can you used tinned?
Loomis
You can also use canned sardines for your gel food.
