I just made gel food for the first time and my fish love it! I put green peppers, cucumber, carrots, broccoli, and a few orange slices in it. ^_^ does anybody have any thoughts, coments, or recipes on gel food?

Gel food is great, it keeps my sdb fish from getting floaty.

I make mine with various types of veggies, whatever kinds I have around the house that that are good for goldies, plus whatever freeze-dried fish food I have, and seafood like sardines, tuna, salmon, shrimp, and fish vitamins. My fish love their gel food.

Dory, since you made all that nice gel food for your fish, you think they'd return the favor and clean the kitchen up for ya?

Well, at least MY kitchen looks always a bit.....messy.....when I am done with the gel food cooking!

My fish are big fans of the gel food I make, too. I have 2 thoughts for you, though...
-- if any of your fish are not orange, you might want to think about how much in the way of orange veggies [carrots, oranges] you put in the food. Before I gave up and started making my own gel food [about a year ago, I think], the only sinking pellets I could really find had color enhancers -- color in this case meaning orange. My redcap started going yellow around the gill/neck area. He looked jaundiced. That was the end of the sinking pellets.
-- All sorts of veggies are good for fish, but they do need some protein, as well. The recipe I use came from the board, and is basically 1 cup of veggies with 1/2 cup of tuna. The veggies supply all the good things veggies supply, and the tuna gives them protein. [This works best when one kicks relatives out of the kitchen who ask "Tuna? You're putting in tuna? What if they get mad fish disease?!"]

need to use a fattier fish like sardines, salmon or whitefish. Or add some flaxseed oil with the tuna to get more of the essential fatty acids.
