Hi everyone:

I've heard alot about peas on this board but I don't have the time to feed them peas other then weekends. On weekdays I think I should at least feed them veggies twice. What's a good veggie food (not fresh, like pellets or flakes)?

I'm thinking of algae wafers by hikari, are those good for goldfish as veggie if I break em up?

I'm not sure about those, I've no idea.

But what I would do, is cut up some grapes, remove the skin, and chop them very fine. Leave them in a container in your fridge. Since you dont' have a lot of time, take a few pieces out about 5 minutes before feeding them, and then just feed those.

You could do that with oranges etc as well. They should warm to room temp in just a few minutes, and if you already have them pre cut, you can just drop them in like regular food.

Sorry I don't know any premade veggie foods, maybe someone else will.

Another couple of good ones, are sweetcorn (which is prepared the same as peas, so may not be good for you until the weekends) - and lettuce.

Lettuce is great, as you can buy a stick on lettuce clip, and just stick a leaf of WASHED lettuce into it. Your fish can nibble away at this happily and it only takes a few seconds to do. I read a post on here, of someone who cuts into the edges of the leaf making little 1cm sections for the fish to nibble, as this makes it easier for smaller fish. That should only take 2 mins at most!

Hope this helps!

My goldfish absolutely adore algae wafers. I used to just throw a whole one in the tank and they'd chase it around for hours nibbling at it. However, one day I noticed one of the fish swimming rather erratically with his mouth kind of stretched and he had an algae wafer stuck in there! Because they had grown a lot they could get them in their mouths whole and this poor fish was choking on the thing! I had to give him the fishy heimlich manouver with the help of a pair of tweezers! So anyway, if your fish are tiny it wont hurt to put a hole one in for them to nibble, but if they are anything over a couple of inches then I'd chop it into tiny pieces and soak it first so that you don't have any accidents.
As for fresh veggies - I often prepare enough for a week (cook, chop etc) then put them in a tiny tuppaware box in the fridge. They can then be fed without any preparation whenever you like.

My oranda likes little bits of cucumber (without the skin), also zucchini squash or yellow squash. Very easy to keep in the refrigerator, just cut a little piece off. Also, I have given him spirulina enriched brine shrimp, and he loves it! However, he doesn't care for lettuce or spinach.
