We have a 2.5 gallon tank. What could live in a tank that size? Are there any saltwater fish that can? Or tropical, or bettas? Anything so that the tank won't go to waste? Thanks for the help!

For a salt water tank it would be very hard to deal with, I have seen some people try it but its been very skilled Salt water people who have done it. The problem is that no fish can live in that small of a tank for salt water. The only thing you could have in there would be mushrooms but then your looking at some Strong lights you would have to have hanging or something like that since mushrooms need at least 3 watts per gal of water. So your looking at 6 watts for that tank. Also it would need good filtration and a very watchful eye on the nitrates, Ph, calcium and Alk.....i my self have a 13 gal tank and its not that easy to do at first.

I would say a Betta would be the best bet for you Hun

I agree with koko the betta would be the best idea...
He/She will love it in there.. or you could get 1 or 2 African dwarf frogs aswell.
Ummm i know someone who keeps a few neons in a 3 gallon but these guys are very sensitive and need a filter ect ect...
So A betta or Adf (african dwarf frog) would be best

Oooooh, the frog idea is interesting. Do they need dry land/water or just water? Or if I went the betta route- what is better a male or female? The tank does have a filter- it's a Whisper Micro Filter that came with the tank (It's a Mini-Bow 2.5 glass aquarium). Which are easier to care for (frogs or bettas)? Thanks so much!! You've both been very helpful!

hmm in my opinion bettas are easier ( being i never kept frogs) but bettas aren't that demanding lol
Males are the ones with beautiful long finnage and they flare alot
now females are short finned and flare as well
It is really your choice, imo males are more flashier and attractive in an aquarium (srry to all you female betta lovers!)

There are lots of different tail types of bettas. (Crowntails and halfmoons are my personal favorite) If you did a quick google search on different betta tails then you might find pics.
Here are the tails I know:
Halfmoon Betta.
Doubletail Betta.
Plakat Betta.
Crowntail Betta.
Veiltail Betta.

with your tank.

Hmmm... I think that a betta would be best out of the 2 in my opinion....
I think you'll only find males i have a hard time finding females.
If your gett a betta make sure that the filter current isn't to strong and that the
sucktion stube is coverd so the betta doesn't get cought in it.

I also think that a male betta is the way to go on a 2.5 gal tank, they display better in the tank cause of the long finnage. My favorites are the halfmoons and the crowntails

. But it is your choice,

Thanks for the ideas and information! I'll let you know what I decide. I still have to get another tank for my goldies and get them moved over before I put anything else in my little tank so i don't know exactly how long that will be. But the next timeI am at the petstore I will be sure to look at the bettas!

Bettas are great, I have two. They are very friendly and interactive with humans as well.
Another option would be white clouds. They are schooling fish and you could manage 4 in your tank as it has a filter. They don't grow very big and do well in cold water. They are totally different in personality and behaviour to a betta, so it's just a matter of personal preference. I have white clouds with my gf.

i too have an African Dwarf Frog, they arnt too demanding, i keep mine in a spare bowl that i have. Idealy i think they should have a heater, but mine has recently broken, and he is still doing fine without one. They arnt really demanding at all, and they are VERY cute!

most salamanders do better with a bigger tank and one that they can transverse from water to land. My salamander is now 12 years old and loves his space. I say go with the betta, they are wonderfull!

I agree. 2.5 gallons sounds like the perfect size to house a betta. Oh, bettas are wonderful. Come on, join us crazies and catch the betta bug!!

As far as saltwater goes you could actually keep a couple pairs of very happy dwarf seahorses in a 2.5. Only thing is though, seahorses can be VERY difficult to take care of, espacially if wild caught. I wouldn't try it unless you are willing to do some serious homework and lots of regular work to keep the little seaponies alive. If you already have saltwaer experiance, that helps too.
-sigh- One day I will have Dwarf Seahorses...
I would definately say a betta. I have my two bettas in seperate 2 gallon hexes and they are very happy.. My oldest one is 2 years old and going strong. The other one I've had for almost a year now. I would definately go betta. They are fantastic little fishies!
