Full Version: How Much Should I Feed My Goldfish?

I know that the rule of thumb on goldfish is to not feed more than once or twice a day tops. I feed only once..... I know that I am not overfeeding them.

But how do I know they are getting enough? This is the part that concerns me. I ussually feed for about a minute (for 4 fish of different sizes in one aquarium and in another aquarim there is three fish). is this enought time?

Also, I really try hard to make sure that there is no left over food. ussually the only time there is any left over food in my aquariums is when a goldfish (two stinkers in particular smile.gif ) already have a mouthful, see a flake floating past and he/she will spit out the food in his/her mouth for a single smaller flake. this happens 2-3 time a week.

So how do I know they are getting enough?

Thanks,
Sammie

My two fish do the same. But I believe they are constipated, so they are fasting right now, and 2day, i have to run out and get them some peas to eat

I feed mine as much as they will eat in under two minutes, twice a day. biggrin.gif

i just take a pinch of food wait for them to eat that quickly then i take another pinch and wait again i normally give 2-3 pinches everyday that works fine for my goldies

A minute a day seems too little. If its only once a day, i would boost it to as much as they can eat for 3-5min. I like counting about how many pellets (since I feed pellets). Like in my goldfish tank with 6 goldfish, they can fit about 5-6 pellets in their mouth at the same time, so I throw in about 30-35 pellets each time I feed, so its like one mouth full every meal smile.gif. But I feed them three times a day, but lately been cutting back to twice a day.

I feed my goldfish a small amount 3-4 times per day. There's nothing wrong with feeding them several times per day, as long as you just feed them a little each time. Actually it's more natural and better for their digestive systems to eat small amounts multiple times per day (which is the way they'd eat in a natural environment, contantly grazing on the little bits of food they find).

It depends on what you're feeding them.

I agree with Val that multiple smaller meals are better. They don't have a stomach like we do, so feed them too much and it comes out the back end partially digested.

Pellets and flakes are mainly protein and fast carbs. not a heathy diet when fed exclusively. I'd add fresh veggies and fruits to their diet.

I feed mine home-made gel food and fresh foods/plants. They spend about 10 minutes chewing their dinner before they get it all eaten (green beans, peas, lima beans and cocktail shrimp).

At least once a week, I put 1/4 of a zucchini in the tank for them to munch on whenever they want. Takes em a couple of days to polish it off. They get kiwi off and on. There are lots of other fresh foods you can feed.
