Though the original four fry from my first batch are undoubtedly female, this one is not.



This is the only surviving fry from the second batch... born only two weeks from the first four from the same mother.

I finally figured out how to tell the males from the females at the younger ages... The males always seem to have bellies that look like they swallowed a small ball. The females have the elongated boxy bellies. At least, that's how I believe you tell 'em apart! It was the only difference I noticed in "Mutt" as opposed to the females.

I really like Mutt! His mom was a half black yellow with some black spots on her tail... but Mutt ended up with so much more color! His top fin is actually an iridescent white (throwing reflections of purple and blue at times). His black part at the base of his tail has an iridescent green overlay to it. And his yellow tail is turning orangy in the middle! He's quite beautiful!

Some of the other fry are getting color now too, but it's all black or army green.

yeah guppies can be pains, sometimes they dont sex untill REALLLL late, they are all born looking female i beleive but it takes a while for the males to show

Any double tails?

The doubletails are a liiittle too small to tell for sure, but I snapped some photos of at least one that seems to really show a double tail!

Can't you tell there sex with there Anal fin? if it's rather long and pointed its a male and if it's not it's a female...???

they are all born with anal fins, but the males kinda dissapears and he then gets his *manhood* i beleive

Boy, I just popped in here to ask if it was possible that ALL of my guppy fry were female. The biggest ones even look kinda like they are pregnant - big ball bellies. The mommy fish has a huge, very colorful tail, so what I am seeing in their tails matches hers - it does not give a clue towards sex.

I would have thought the females had the "ball" bellies and the males would be streamlined for that is what the adults look like. If males do look roundy - I should have a nice number of males.

So..... I should just wait longer, huh? The oldest are about 8 weeks now - about 1/2 the size of an adult fish.

I want to separate them asap, so I do not get more babies!!!!! The fish shop will take all my extras, but I want to keep the males for a bright tank on my desk at work.

So the yellow spike under his belly is his "manhood" ???

Thanks, BO!! You know I had just thought about this issue after I made the post wondering, well, those fins on the bottom are longer... (and apparently fertile!).

daryl, I totally understand the frustration. I thought for sure that all of my fry were female for weeks. Here's the scary part. Both you and I probably already have pregnant female fry, since they can get pregnant at one month of age... and neither of us thought we had males. The other posters are right about the fin underneath the belly. The females have an anal fin that has a nice spread and is relatively short. The males seem to have longer fins that are more "clamped down" looking. I'm gonna try to separate mine out today.

Wow nice pics once again. Very pretty guppies, even the boys. I know boys aren't pretty, they are handsome, but hey, pretty is pretty.

Oh, gosh, I hope they are not pregnant!!! There is one particularly large, pretty one with a gorgeous yellow leopard tail that looks just like mama and she looks very pregnant. She is only about 1/2 the size of an adult fish, though!!!!!

They all have bright red/orange/yellow spottted tails, with a little blue thrown in as a nod to mom's blue coloration.

Good grief. I really do not want so many babies. I just want a pair or two and a tank of pretty males. Sigh.....

So I look for anal fins that are rounded or spikey? Any spikies, I transfer to the "male tank" and roundies go to the "female tank"? I get one in the wrong place (a male in the female one!) and whooooooeeeeee I get babies! Do not want that to happen.

They should come with little M's and F's printed on their little sides.
