tank #1
dimensions: length=10 width=20 height=12
current fish: common pleco (size:?)
new fish wanted:
(3) black neon tetra
(3) black phantom tetra
(3) silver tipped tetra
tank #2
dimensions: length=10 width=20 height=12
current fish: none
new fish wanted:
(3) fire dwarf gourami
(1) siamese algae eater
(1) bronze cory
both tanks are 10 gallon.
tank #1 as a pretty good amount of plastic plants in it + a rock ornament in the middle of the tank.
tank #2 has some sea shells i found laying around the house (should i take them out?!) and it has 1 medium/large size plastic plant in one corner.
would i be overstocked? (i'm not very good at deciding, which is why i'm asking)

hi thelonius
to start with i think the plec is going to be too big for your tank. plecs no matter what the size produce heaps of pea and poo, and will grow very big. how about a butterfly loach or hong kong plec? but i wouldnt get any until the tank is established with lots of algae.
the first tank is going to be overstocked if you take in to account the adult size of the fish and thats not including the plec. all those fish will grow to at least 2 inches each. the general rule is 1 gallon per inch of fish so already at adult size you are looking at 18 gallons and im using uk gallons not u.s by the way. another way some people decide is to take the length in inches and then you can get 10 inches of fish.
saying that though, my tank is slightly over stocked and all i can suggest is that you may need to do more water changes and keep a closer eye on quality of the water if thats the fish you want.
i dont know what to suggest for the first tank, maybe just the one species of maybe 5, plus the small plec??
the second tank i would take the shells out as this will alter your water chemistry. the gouramis, were you planning on all males? male gouramis in a small tank will fight so i would only suggest the one. the algae eater is fine, but you will need to watch out for any aggression toward other fish. the cory dont like to be on their own so you will need to get 3 at least which may be too much for your tank. maybe you can get two, hopefully someone else can help you here as these are just my humble thoughts.
good luck with the choices you make thelonius and keep us all posted on what you decide.

sorry thelonius but tetras need to be kept in a group of at least 4 with their own kind. and i still think 3 dwarf gouramis is too much, maybe two females. its your call though

pherhaps i'll try just 4 black neon tetras or 4 black phantom tetras depending on which one my fish store has. and i'll try either 2 or 3 female dwarf gourami. anyways, time to go to sleep.

I agree with Sandy, the tank will be to small for a pleco....

actually,i have 3 tanks that currently have fish in them.
2 of which have common plecos.1 of which i have had for ages and i've never had problems

: although any new tanks i get will have a siamese algae eater instead. because while i like common plecos, they're not exactly the best looking fish out there.
