I recently bought three new fish, two ryukins and a moor. I bought them from Petco, but the fish there are usually pretty good (it's acutally better than any of the locally owned stores). They did have some sick looking fish, though (they said they get all their fish from Florida and something about the hurricanes down there stressed them all out).

Anyway, I got them home and put them in an already cycled 10 gallon (they're small enough that it's not overcrowded). I plan on keeping them there for a few weeks before putting them in my 55. One of the ryukins seems pretty healthy, but the moor has a bit of ich and some minor swim bladder issues (they haven't eaten in two days, so I'll find out soon if it's due to constipation). The other ryukin, though, just sits behind some plants and normally hangs out right at the top of the aquarium, right below the surface. He can swim lower, though, so I know he doesn't have any serious swim bladder issues.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? Is he just stressed out and shy? Or could he be sick.

If you just got them, you have to give them at least a week or so to settle in. Some fish take longer than that.

I would just watch and wait for a while, and see if any other symptoms come up. Of course, you will be treating the ich I would imagine...

Another thing you probably want to do is use separate containers and siphons for the tank with the ich in it. You don't want to transfer any of those pesky critters to your 55 gallon!

Hi,

Have you checked the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH levels in the tank? Three goldfish in a 10 gallon is definitely overcrowded - even if they are still little tiddlers - so water quality may be an issue. I would check this out first.

Hanging around at the surface usually suggests lack of oxygenation, but as the other fish aren't affected I'd say it's not a mechanical cause - like lack of surface movement - but a medical cause like gill flukes or other parasites (possibly even the ich). What are you using to treat the ich and finrot?

I'm moving this post to the Diseases forum as I think you'll get more responses there. smile.gif

do you have bubbles going in your tank? i have found that they love bubbles- also, have you put any treatment in the water...like ick away? sometimes when i get new fish, i put a tiny bit of medication in the water, not a whole dosage, but a little just in case there is anything on them that i didn't notice...maybe they will perk up then? are they in a spot tat is well lit? are they in an area where they can see people a lot? i have noticed that my fish reallllly enjoy being in my kitchen- that is where everything is going on, and there is always bound to be someone there- try these things, and see how they work-POPEYE
