A local restaurant has a huge fish tank with four goldies (three commons, and a comet), and a few tinfoil barbs. I was wondering if goldies and tinfoil barbs are compatible. unsure.gif

post-8-1043925530.gif tin fiol barbs are a large schooling fish. they get to be to be a foot long or so. i would not put tin fiols in a goldfish tank. i would put them in a tank of large cichlids. i do know of a man that had some feeder goldfish in with his oscar. he ate all but one. the oscar and goldfish lived their lives together ever after. these fish may have been together for a long time and tolerate each other. if these fish (tin/gf) are new to each other they may fight. if the goldfish are comets they will do much better than fancy ones, they move much faster. :goldfish

thanxsn.gif Thanks for answering my post.

I don't know how long the barbs and gfs were in the tank together, but all of the fish seemed to be healthy, except the largest common, which had a rather deep tear in its tail fin. The common's tail seemed to be torn all the way down to the base of the tail, the poor fish didn't move around very much it seemed to say in one corner of the tank most of the time. I don't know if this was caused by the barbs or the other gfs, it may have even been injured by an ornament in the tank. unsure.gif

tinfoil barbs can tolerate up to moderately hard waters usually, but its best to keep them in slightly acidic/soft water. they also like the temp to be in the mid 70s. other than that, they can grow to be quite large a 1 foot adult size! they eat pretty much whatever but should be offered veggies routinely. they are peaceful fish otherwise.

with these requirements in mind, it might not be a good idea to try them out with goldfish. i mean, you might be able to get away with one or two and some commons or comets. but you would have to gear the water chemistry and temp for the barbs. not t mention how big the tank would have to be! blink.gif

honestly, i have never ever gone into a resaraunt that had a properly maintained tank. heck, japanese restaraunts are the worst! ever see how many koi and goldfish they try to cramm into those 30-50 gallon tanks??? its just horrible. in an american restaraunt, ive gone to get the manager to let them know how badly the tank needs attention. when he looked at me like a moron, i went ahead and serviced the tank myself! every fish had tail-rot, it needed water and the filters had stopped working. needless to say, i didnt leave until the filter was running again.... <_<
