Does anyone know how to build a "trickle column" type filter? Im not sure if thats the right name... blink.gif But if you know how to build one of them...please post!
Myaj
A friend of mine has made a wet/dry trickle filter, here's an article as to how he did it:

And here's a place with lots of DIY articles:

Hope some of that helps!

If you haven't already, check out www.wetwebmedia.com, they tend to have a lot of DIY stuff as well.

Yeah, myaj that link you posted about how your friend made a filter......its not working

are you thinking of building one for a tank or a pond?

basically a trickle filter is a tube that is filled up with bio-media and topped off with some filter floss. the dirty tankwater is pump up into the top of the tube, filtered through the floss for mechanical filtration, runs through the bio-media to convert ammonia on down to nitrates and then it flows out the bottom of the trickle tower and into the tank/pond.

you can use pretty much any container that you want for the resevoir. just pick out a durable material that is just the right size for your application. it will help to have a drill/dremel type tool to make the cuts so that everything fits real snug.

gaskets and connectors can all be found at ace hardware or some other home improvement store as well as the floss. you just need to look around for a bit to find the right stuff to use.

if your looking to make one for a pond, you should look into a five gallon bucket to make the taower. if its for a tank, you could make it out of something as cheap as a two liter bottle. the secret is to make all the connections as tight as you can to prevent leakage.

aw heck, lemme go look for a good link for you................... B)

ok, found these for you:

wet/dry 1

diy 2

of course, these plans include a overflow box (on tank rim) and a sump (in big resevoir) to pump the water back to the aquarium or pond. in the concept that i described to you earlier, its much more fool proof in that you dont need the overflow box because the water just drains back down into the pond/aquarium. the plans above are just in case you want to get super technical and make a more proffessional commercial grade (under tank) unit.

happy tinkering! biggrin.gif

thanks for the links....its for a 40gal tub..so kinda like a mini-pond

try a three gallon bucket. you can get them new at paint stores or a hardware store. youll need the lid too.

basically a hole is cut into the side of the bucket at the bottom. a hose is run out from the bucket for the return to the pond. bio-balls are placed in the bucket to within a few inches of the top. a sheet of floss is cut to just a lit bigger around than the bucket and placed snugly over the bio-balls. a hole is cut into the lid thats just big enough to run another into it. just inside of the lid, a sprayer or diffuser of sorts is needed to cast the incoming, dirty water as evenly of the floss as you can. the hose coming out of the lid comes in from the pond/powerhead.

can you picture what im saying? huh.gif sorry if i reapeated myself, im just trying to make it as clear as possible. smile.gif

its a rather simple and cheap way to make a filter. although, there are powerheads available with pre-filtering capabilities. if you were to get one of those, you could skip the floss in the bucket.

hereyou go, i drew out a diagram for you of what im talking about. in hindsight, since its only a 40 gallon pond, you could get away with using a 1-3 gallon bucket full of bioballs and floss.

hope this helps! biggrin.gif

Oh dang it, I forgot you have to be registered at that site to see their articles.. that bugs the heck out of me! Let me see if I can find his personal page with the same info...

Ack, he doesn't have it on there. Well, if you register at www.aquaden.com then you can see the article.
