I would like to create a water polisher out of a spare powerhead I've got lying around. My plan is to purchase a short length of tubing (the kind used to connect the powerhead to an undergravel filter). Inside the tube, I plan to "sandwich" some diatomaceous earth between two pieces of filter sponge or floss. My questions are:

What material would be best used as the "bread" to keep the powder inside the tube without it leaching through and into the aquarium?

Is the diatomaceous earth sold at hardware/pool supply stores suitable for aquariums?

I fear my idea is too simple - what technical issues would prevent this setup from working?

Thanks in advance!

for one, you would do much better using a 1 liter soda bottle as the tube. two, you would need diatamecous bags that were rated for such. the bag would need to be tied (looped) around the soda bottle top. then youd want to stuff the bag down into the sodabottle wich has the bottom cut out of it. this would act as the resevoir for the d-earth. you would then need to push a hose over the lid that leads from the tank and powerhead for intake purposes.

i have a crude rendering of what im talking about. im just having probs getting it to load right now. ill get some help and return here soon! smile.gif

hope it helps! biggrin.gif
