hi everyone!

I'm new to this board but have been reading for a couple weeks or so. smile.gif

I am interested to know if the Apple snail and the Golden Mystery snail is in fact the same creature. The shop I got my snail (supposedly an apple snail) said that they are different from each other. I have read a variety of opinions on this on the Web, but for the most part I have read that they are actually the same thing being sold under different names.

Can anyone give me the facts? smile.gif If they are indeed different from each other, how do I tell which is which?

I have a gorgeous (apple?) snail, named Helmut, living with my 5 goldfish and 2 green cory cats.

Many thanks!

Alright, mystery snails are a part of the family of snails called apple snails... meaning they are the same species... now stores don't knopw this because whenever they see something has a different name they take it as a whole new creature (no offence)

so your golden mystery snail ( i have one too) is an apple snail

heres a great site

Probably a Pomacea bridgesii or Pomacea canaliculata, the two most common snails sold at pet stores. Canas eat plants and brigs do not. Both are sold in pet stores as "mystery snails" and both can be gold colored.

Hamstaman is right, check out :

There is a page on how to identify your snail, that is very detailed.

And watch out for those snails, they are as addicting as the goldfish! rolleyes.gif

They are basically the same thing, they all come in different colours etc... they get the same treatment, food and so on.

hi again smile.gif

Thank you for the information... I suppose Helmut is a Pomacea bridgesii as he doesn't seem to eat the plants in the aquarium (Anarachis). I've spent quite a bit of time at applesnail.net but am still not certain by comparing Helmut with the pics/diagrams there.

Regardless, I am amazed at how entertaining a snail can be. smile.gif

Thanks again for the information, folks. I appreciate it. smile.gif

I would bet it's a bridg...if you had a cana, you definately would not have a shred of plant left by now!

Snails are really cool, I started out with one, now I have four, and I am waiting for their eggs to hatch! biggrin.gif
