I always do. I use Stress coat, there are others out there that are better for bettas, but this is what I have on hand so I'll use it up. For instance there is one that binds ammonia so it's not as toxic.
To get your cycle started you could use the filter from your existing tank, it should already have all the good bugs in it. Or use something like Nitromax or I have Stress zyme. It adds more bugs to help jumpstart the cycle. If you are going to do a fishless cycle, you'll still have to "feed" the tank. The food is going to be your source of ammonia for now. And the good bugs will feed on the ammonia and turn it into nitrites. Then a second set of bugs will feed on the nitrite and turn it to nitrate, the end product. These are still toxic to your fish, so when you do water changes this, along with the poo, is what you are removing to make the levels lower and more tolerable. Do you have test kits? If not you'll need one for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Ph is good to have also. After the ammonia peeks and starts to drop again, nitrites will start showing up. After they peek and drop off, your tank has cycled! There is a guide to a fishless cycle I think in the goldie section of the board if you need more info. And if you already knew all this, I'm sorry to put you through it again!
I hope I helped a little!
