Just my opinion - I put my stick on near the middle/bottom so when I do a water change I can still see what the temp of the water is. I also put it on the same side as the heater, but not too close to it, that way I know the warmest part of the tank.
By internal, do you mean floating? It may go where it wants to....LOL

some place it inside the filter where water flows in. this prevent accident as you dun know what the fishes can do during their free time especially if you have your thermometer low enough for other components (rocks or pots) to knock into when the fish is strong enough to bump it..
for some people, they place protective guard over it..
for some, to be more accurate, they place numerous thermometer at different spot, top of tank, bottom and in filter..
but for me.. I dun put them anywhere.. I will dip them in different spot of the tank whenever I need to know the reading.. other time, the thermometer is out of the tank.. it doesnt take long to take readings.. but it is not worth the risk having a thermometer in the tank.. imagine the alcohol/mercury leaks!!

dun worry if you have nothing inside the tank where the goldfishes can bump into which will crash into the thermometer.. otherwise, place the thermometer in a safe corner..
Goldfishes are like kids.. it is like keeping the thermometer out of reach from the children..

Hi! I like to keep mine in the filter. The water is allways flowing and will give you an acurate reading . We put so much hard work into making a tank look nice. And I have never seen one that is astetically nice to look at . Also if your a bit older as I am it gets harder to read while its in the water. I also belive its safer to keep it there for the fish and the thermometer. As far as mercury leaking. (Ive never herd of this happening) ever. Not while its setting?hanging in the tank. And when you leave it in the filter you dont have to open the cover of your tank to get at it. Thus causing less disturbance to our little buddies.

I was lucky enough that my mom's business donated a digital thermometer. So I only have the probe in the water in one end and a little cheap stick on at the other and they read closely to the same temp inside and out.

So I think that you can place yours in a place that is suitable for your tank without to much worry.
