After reading about gel foods here and in texts, etc. decided to try my own and am wondering if I'm shorting the fish in any essential nutrients or am unbalanced in nutrients, etc. Hey Dataguru, you seem to have the figures so hope you see this.
Recipe:
1 cup frozen carrots and peas thawed in microwave
1/4 cup fresh salmon cooked in microwave
1/2 large fresh red bell pepper
2 egg whites
Process in food processor and cook in microwave until very hot
Add 2 envelopes unflavored gelatine and stir thoroughly.
Add
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup Fiber One cereal that has been ground up
When cool stir in
1 acidophilus tablet and 1/2 dog vitamin that have been softened in water
The fish seem to love this stuff and so do the dog and the canary. I don't think the turtle or parrot have touched it.

ok... Here's the nutritional breakout.
Note: Since I don't have any doggie vitamins, I substituted 1/4 of a adult multivitamin.
The salmon is a good choice as it has a decent amino acid profile and has essential omega 3 fatty acids.
Egg whites are great sources of proteins and essential amino acids. I worry about salmonella tho. Check on the web and see how hot for how long you have to get them to make sure there are no salmonella left alive.

It looks pretty good. smile.gif
The only issue is that goldfish with flipping issues *might* have trouble with the wheat.

Thanks so much for the analysis. That is what I was looking for. Happy that it came out as "pretty good" as I have a lot of it.

Cool. smile.gif

So where'd you come up that recipe?

I saw one similar with whole eggs the other day... it was pretty high in cholesterol and fats tho.

The recipe came from several different recipes for gel-food that I'd read. I knew I wanted peas and the carrots were an after thought. I believe I pulled the salmon, acidophilus and maybe the vitamins from some of your (Dataguru) posts. The eggs may have come from Dr. Johnson, and the red pepper from who knows where. The Fiber One cereal was my contribution because I really believe in the stuff and eat lots of it myself. Quantities of each was just luck. I like to cook and fool around with recipes and this one worked on the first try. It gels nicely and slices nicely. I mash it up for the small goldfish, cut it into small cubes for the pond fish and just drop in a chunk that sinks to the bottom for the tank fish. So far no problems in the way of water clouding or contamination. The dog drives me crazy when I'm feeding the fish and runs from pond to pond as I move in hopes I'll drop some or give him a little (which I do).

Hey that's awsome! smile.gif

Mind if I put it up on a web page and cite you as the source?
DataGuru
Hey Milo. Did you add any water to it?
