I have been wanting to make gel food for my gf, but I don't know if the type of gelatin I have is safe for my fish. blink.gif Most of the recipes I have read include a powdered mix of gelatin, but is it safe to use the liquid ones insted of powdered? unsure.gif (I don't think that the local stores sell the powdered stuff)

Is there any thing harmful in gelatin like preservatives? (I know that gelatin is just protien, but is there any thing that I should worry about?)

Could you post the ingredients in the liquid gel?

sorry I don't have the stuff right now but when I get I will post the ingredients. I though that I had some but I just checked and couldn't find it. sad.gif

It is hard to believe that a grocery store in this day and age doesn't carry "Knox Unflavored Gelatine." I suppose this is possible in a small country or rural store, but certainly not in any of the major chains. Don't confuse the unflavored gelatine with a liquid product such as Sure-Jel which is a pectin product and is used to make jelly and jam.

I think that is the stuff I may have been thinking about. unsure.gif Is it okay to use that?

I haven't been to the store lately so I still don't know if they sell the kind of gel you are supposed to use.

I live in a "city" with about 6,000 people or more, its practically like living on an island, there are no roads in or out, the only way to get here is by taking a plane, or boat. There are no major stores in the area and every thing is really expensive, its really difficult to shop for some things ( sad.gif especially aquarium supples!!!) , and sometimes suff on the selves isn't exactly fresh ill.gif ( I don't know how many times I have accidently bought things that had already expired! ignore.gif ).

Most pectin for making jams has other additives and is not safe to make gel food with. Things you can use: Knox unflavored gelatin, Pomona's pectin (which is pure pectin with no additives), or agar-agar, a type of sea weed that's used in place of gelatin (this is what I use to make gel food). Its strange that you don't have much of a store in your area -- I mean, how do all those 6000 people eat? lol. I've lived in towns smaller than that and there's always been someplace to get something as common as plain unflavored gelatin.

Well I haven't really had time to check if they do sell the suff or not.

I live in Alaska and you would be surprised what people here have learned to do without. Many people in the surrounding villages lack any plumbing to their homes and have to get water from lakes, rivers, or from the local washateria, and they also have to use buckets with lined with trash bags as a toilet ( these are often called honey buckets). I myself live in a town that dose have "sanitary" running sewer and water (though it seems a little questionable at times). Efforts to deal with the plumbing issue have been extremely slow, and often funding for projects in rural areas is very inadequate. Just about all of the state money goes to the larger cities because they have better representation.
