headscratch.gif I have been thinking of buying koi food for my fish. I have a common goldfish, and I thought that since gfs and koi are so similar that it would be okay to feed koi food to a goldfish. The brand of food that I was thinking of buying came in a 19 OZ. bag, and only cost $6.99 which is alot cheeper when compared to the 3.53 OZ. food that I usually buy for $9.49, plus I checked out the ingredient list and the koi food seems to be alot more nutritious than the usual gf food that I buy. I also figured that it would less expensive to buy the koi food, because I constantly have to buy many suplimental foods (right now I have got 4 different types of foods plus some fruits and frozen vedgies icecream.gif , of corse I would still feed a few of the suplimental foods especially the vedgies food.gif).

I was thinking that if I bought the bigger bag that I would keep some frozen in vacuum sealed bags to keep them fresh, because most of the food would probably go stail since it would only be eaten by one goldfish.

Dose any any one disagree with feeding koi food to goldfish?

Is there anything I should worry about if I do decide to buy the koi food?

Kois and goldfishes came from the same family so generally, they're the same. Yes, you can feed them Koi food. Just make sure that your fish is big enough for them. Some koi foods even have small goldfish drawings on their bags. B)

thanxsn.gif that’s what I thought. I just wanted to make sure if it was okay. Buying the other food will save me a lot of money and its better than the gf food I have now lol.GIF . If the food is too large I can always break it into smaller pieces, but I shouldn't have a problem with the size, because my fish is about 4-5 inches long and I think that she is going through a growth spurt.

For a common koi food should be okay, so would it be for shubunkin and comets. Anything more fancy, and I wouldn't recommend it. The koi food is meant to be for slender fish with long bodies, where the food does not get stuck so easily. With a round body type of, say, an oranda, that food would do more harm than good.
I myself feed the Hi Feng koi growth food to my koi and the goldfish outside, and I make sure the food is soaked for the goldies before they get it. I also buy the smallest available pellet size I can find.
As long as you still stick with some supplemented food otherwise, especially in the veggie section, like peas and spiruline, it should be fine...smile.gif

Ranchu girl, what's your biggest goldfish and koi outside in your pond, just wondering, how many goldies do you own, I think I once saw some picks with alot of tanks and tubs, but I'm not sure if they were your's or erika's?

Aqua, read your note about freezing the koi food. I'm assuming you're talking about a dry, pelleted food and not a frozen food. Read somewhere recently not to freeze the dry, pelleted food as it changes the fats in some undersirable way. The instruction was to refrigerate but not freeze. I think I read this in Dr. Johnson's book "Fancy Goldfish". I don't understand it but thought I'd pass it along.

blink.gif I didn't know that!!! maby when I get the stuff I just vac seal some of the food, and not freeze it. That should be okay, right? The bags are air tight which should prevent moisture, bacteria, mold and other bad stuff from getting in.

ps. I heartpump.gif this new emoticon!!! fish.gif

Really? I just tossed a bag of pellets into the freezer coz there were tiny things crawling in it. Its still good, just that some insects have survived in there. I hope its ok. I just placed it in the freezer to kill the lil bugs.

lol.GIF Yeah one time my fish food had bugs in it, but it was meant to, because it was a container of blood worms.

huh.gif But seriously I don't think I would have kept the pellets if I found living bugs crawling around in them. ill.gif blink.gif
