I was wondering if anybody has tried a "flakeless diet" for goldfish and koi.

I mean, no fish flakes, just fruit and lettuce and veggies and meat...

I am condering trying a flakeless diet with my fish... I can't get the flakes to sink and my one fish keeps getting SBD.

I also think it would probably be more nutritious.

Has anybody ever tried this?

I don't feed any flakes to my goldfish. I only feed them soaked pellets or bloodworms and fruits and vegetables. What kind of meat were you thinking of feeding them? I've fed mine earthworms also.

The only thing close to flake I feed is Progold, but besides that I feed them everything on the other list we got going there. I just dont think there is much nutrition to flake foods ohmy.gif

I don't feed my goldies commercial foods. my 9" black moor had some bouyancy issues with flake food and with algae wafers.

In the morning, they get my current batch of color enhancing gel food. Here's another gel food, recipe, I've worked up that will probably be the next gel they get. In the evening, they get shrimp or krill and green beans, peas and lima beans.

I usually keep a slice of squash (zuchini or yellow) in the tank on a veggie clip. I also give them duckweed, azolla and frogbit plants once a day along with some live daphnia. They also get live redworms from time to time. I've also added some of my larger ramshorn snails (which they don't seem to be eating...yea!), but even tho I've seem multiple globs of eggs on the side of the tank, I never see any baby rams. Hopefully, that's providing a renewable food source for the goldies.

I'm seeing nice growth and happy fish so far, tho I have to wrestle with keeping nitrAtes down. The little ones I got back in March are around 7 inches long now and the little chocolate oranda I got back in June is about 5 inches long now.

Thanks everybody!

I'm trying to find a suitable nutritious diet for my goldfish and koi. I want their true colours to come out...

I don't feed my fish any commercial food either. They get a wide variety of frozen, soaked freeze-dried foods, live earthworms and meal worms, marine algae, and fresh veggies. One of my orandas can get a bit floaty at times, and I think this type of diet helps her. And everybody seems happy and healthy!

i feed ny orandas almost a differentt food everyday, including: pealed peas, bread, pellets, oranges, i tried lettuce my my Orandas dont eat it, my numerous live plants, peaches, and when i dont have any time before school i sink a few flakes into my tank. oh yeah i forgot i have also fed them worms before. yeah.gif

You shouldn't feed bread to your goldfish, it isn't good for them as they aren't designed to digest foods like that.

I have been feeding mine the cheapo brand at nnnnnn. What brands that I can get commercially are good for growing comets?

(I know I should be feeding them better) I also sometimes feed mine spiders I find and moths. Don't ask, they love gulping them down and I love to see the buggies be gone.
