Before I took the under gravel filter out of my 29ga tank, I used to clean under the UGF filter plate with a Fluval 304.
I would take the sponges and bio-media out of the Fluval and put it in some dechlorinated water, then fill all the baskets of the Fluval with filter floss. Then I'd plug one of the uplift tubes of the undergravel filter and hook the inlet side of the Fluval to the other tube and turn the Fluval on.
I'd let the Fluval run for a few minutes sucking up the goo then look under the tank (my stand has an open top so I can see the bottom of the tank) and where ever there was goo left, I'd move the gravel over that area to expose the filter plate of the UGF and that goo would get sucked right out.
When all the goo was cleaned up, I'd dump the floss in the Fluval and after cleaning it, put the old sponges and bio-media back in with new carbon and filter floss.
This method actually worked really well for cleaning under the UGF filter plate, but I don't think there would be any advantage to leaving a cannister filter hooked up to a UGF all the time.
