i have decided to completely clean out the tank before starting out again but i didnt know wat to use to clean it. is there a disinfectant that i can use to clean the gravel and ornaments that wont har m the new fish wen i set it up again ??

You could use bleach, let soak, drain and use "dechlorinator" to get rid of the bleach. If you no longer smell the clorine, you got it all eliminated. The bleach will kill any of the parasites as well.

I think you are actually safe since white spot dies out after they have no host to attach to. I think it is 48 hours. I don't think it's longer then 3-4 days. Anyhow, it would be good to use the bleach because white spot is thought to be dormant in most tanks, but infects fish who have experienced a lot of stress. Hope that helps. wink.gif

Hi,
I am sorry to hear that you lost all of your fish.

A way to prevent ich (or anything else) when adding new plants is to disinfect them first before adding to the tank.

I make a bleach solution--about 9 parts water to 1 part bleach, swish the plants around in it first and then soak them in water with dechlorinator added. Like ed said, if you can't smell the bleach, it is gone. Just keep rinsing.
