Hi

I move house on Thursday & already I am starting to panic about how to transport the goldies etc.

I am moving within a mile of my old house.

I was thinking of keeping the goldies in seperate smaller tanks whilst perhaps recycling the big tanks. Alternatively as it is only a small distance I could keep the majority of the good water .

The fish are also kept in my children's bedrooms. I want to decorate ASAP do you think I should keep them elsewhere in case paint fumes etc might really damage them.

HELP!!!!

hi there. biggrin.gif

not to worry. you wont have to re-cycle the tanks at all. wink.gif

get 2 good rubbermaid (or the like) tubs that will comfortably hold the fish from each tank with about 6 inches of water in the bottoms. 5 gallon buckets will suffice. add the fish with some tankwater to the buckets. and transport them in there. its a good idea to keep some sort of cover over the containers to stifle any attempts at jumping ship and things dropping in.

as for the tanks, take the filters off the tanks and put them each into their own ziplock baggies (or plastic grocery bags). remove as much of the water as your going to be able to transport. dump the rest. remove the ornaments but, leave the gravel in the tanks. if youve got a heater in any of the tanks, turn it off at least 15 minutes before hand. remember to let the heater/s sit in the newly set-up tanks for 15 minutes before turning them back on.

now your ready to move them.

once at the new location, just reverse the process and re-position the filters and turn them back on (dont change the pad). your tanks bio-filter (cycle) shouldnt miss a beat if your only moving a mile away. wink.gif

good luck and let us know how everything turns out! wav.gif

Since 90% of the old tank water will most likely be removed - is it ok to refill the tank in the new location with conditioned/agep tap water (with pH buffered to sane levels, if necessary), and then reconnect the filter immediately? Or will that kill the bacteria in the filter/gravel?

theoretically, that should work just fine. depending on the size of the tank/s in question, discarding most of the water could be the only option. wink.gif

also, since shes moving about a mile away, the water chemistry from the taps shouldnt be much different, if at all.

burnsie,

i didnt catch your inquisition about decorating before. you would do good to cover both tanks with garbage bags and turn off the aerators before you decide to paint anything in their room. especially if your thinking of using some kind of oil-based paint or varnish, etc. once the paint has dried completely, air out the room very well before removing the trash bags.

hope this helps! smile.gif
