my tank is quite new and going through cycle, got 0ppm ammonia but very high nitrites 3ppm, i have a fluval 404 + fluval 4 giving me 2400 litres per hour filteration, my tank is 58 gallon, doing small water changes every day, will this kill the fish- they look well eating ect, hoe can i get the nitritres down? thanks

Do more water changes. you need to do as many water changes as it takes to get all the levels to there ideal condition. It could be one water change a week or 2 or 3 water changes a day. If you get the readings down asap there is no reason your fish should die.

:goldfish I KNOW YOU WERE ASKING ABOUT NITRTITES NOT NITRATES, BUT SINCE THESE TWO COME HAND IN HAND I FELT YOU MAY WANT TO READ SOMETHING I READ. GO THE GOLDFISH CONNECTION THERE IS A POST FROM THEIR HOME PAGE HOME/INFO/WATER QUALITY TO READ BOB THORN'S MY JOURNEY WITH NITRATES. HE SHOWES THE DIFFERANCE BETWEEN 12.5 GALLONS AND 25 GALLONS PER FISH . THE DIFFERANCE BETWEEN A 25 AND 50 PERCENT WATER CHANGE BEFORE AND AFTER WATER CHANGES. banana.gif

Yica, doing a 20-30% water change a day will help them to lower. Also if you add aquarium salt to the tank this will help the gf to handle the nitrites better.

Laurie is right do a 20-30% water change. As for the salt use about 1 tablespoon per 10 gals of water. This will help the fish not to be effected by the nitrites, but only add it once for now if you repeat then you can cause the creeps on the fins biggrin.gif

Also raising the temperature of the tank slightly will help. The bacteria that eats NitrItes and converts them into NitrAtes grows quicker in a warmer temperature.
