Hey there amy!,Sand is great for small Tropical fish or for fish that arn't so messy it could
cloud up the tank, but the sand usally just falls
back down right away,i've heard of some peoples filters getting clog
by the sand, but i don't think thats going to happen if you
take a good kind of sand..
I think it irritates "bigger" fishs gills, and for those kinds of fish that will
pick up gravel (or sand) and spit it out looking for food other then that i think your safe.

Hey there, I had set my tank up for african cichlids, but then got hooked on Goldies!
I know alot of people don't agree with sand, but my Goldies love it! I have pool filter sand, which is a much larger grade of sand, and cheap too! It's easy to clean, poo just lays on top to be vacumned up. I just churn it up once a month to get rid of gas bubbles. It looks great, and my fish seem to love it. Pool filter sand is larger, so it dosn't hang in the water to clog your filter.
You can get it from most hardware stores, or a pool supply store for 8 bucks for 50 pounds. You would use about 1- 1/12 inches sand in your tank, no more.
