Here's a tip....Don't try to buy a fish that sits in a tank 3 foot above your head!!!!!!! Anyway,I just got this Oranda calico with orange/white/some blue, and alot of black through it. It's wen is all black, and there's alot of mixed color on his face and throat, mostly black. Well,my daughter and I are driving home and I take my fish out to check the little guys coloring out closer, and darn if he doesn't have this little air bubble between where his throat and his gill is! <_< Now I found out on line that it's what they call gas bubbles. Anyone ever hear of it or deal with it? I've noticed that he occasionly comes to the surface and gulps... Now there's a few different things that causes this, and one of them happens to be excessive aeration/current. What I'm wondering is-Is the poor thing stuck with it or will it go away? What can I do to aid in his comfort? And does he need an ISO without an airstone? UGH!!!

I have never heard of such a thing. Sharon you poor thing, like you need another sick fish.
I do hope you find out how to treat it and it goes away.

Good luck

Sounds more like a Shubunkin to me...

Anyway, I was told they are called gas bubbles, but I think what they are is just trapped air bubbles.....but what do I know. I think they are no harm to the fish...they get on the sides of my ponds and tanks when I have to do 100% water changes. They go away in time too. I think if you just touch it, it will float away, burst, or disappear.

i read about this a while back and was thinking along the lines of it being similar to a hernia in the folds of skin/membrane under their chins. i suppose that is what these "gas bubbles" are/could be. i was also thinking maybe it isnt air. rather, it could be water instead.

honestly, these are just some thoughts. i really have no idea what they could actually be. unsure.gif but, it shouldnt be detrimental to his health. wink.gif

good luck with him, sharon! biggrin.gif

rolleyes.gif Nope, and actually I messed up-it's the little lionhead calico. Anyway, I did a nice size water change, and I 'm hoping for the best. From what I read,it can be very serious at times, and even cause death so I'm not going to take it too lightly! blink.gif sad.gif

SHaron, this is what I found on gas bubbles on a fish. Its from he puregold site, so that is pretty reliable...smile.gif
"GAS BUBBLE DISEASE
SYMPTOM: bubbles under the skin anywhere, but usually in the fins.

Gas bubble disease happens when the water is full of supersaturated gases. The fish swim into the area where the water is saturated (usually with nitrogen) and takes the gas up across the gills.

It is most often seen when water from deep wells is run directly into ponds or tanks. In the deep well, the water is colder (more gas is dissolved) and under pressure (more gas is dissolved). In tanks, the fine bubbles are seen on the tank walls and everything else and is obvious.

In ponds, a small leak in big pumps that suck air into the stream of water an also create supersaturated conditions, as can swimming pool type sand filters.

Inside, aging water with an airstone degasses well water. For ponds, spraying the water into the air or using degassing columns (running the water over lava rock in a PVC pipe). "

Since Ingrid (the owner of the site) didn't list any treatment, I would think its something that goes away on its own....unsure.gif

I just checked one of my fish health books, and it only says large numbers of bubbles can cause death. There's no list of treatment or remedies, so I have to agree with Ranchugirl and say that one bubble isn't a problem, as long as the goldfish is away from an environment where he could get lots more.

You know, Sharon, those kinds of services are not for free. There is a basic fee for everything, and in your case I figure a minimum payment of at least one picture of the new darling is acceptable, due immediately! rofl3.gif

I got really worried then, with all of the advice I've needed from you guys over the past day I thought I'd owe millions!! If I ever get a new healthy fish I'll send you a pic of her! You wouldn't want one of Dude in his current condition unless you have a horror section!
