amonia-0 nitrates 20 nitrites 0 ph 7.2

My new black moor has a bloody patch under his chin. His behavoir is normal. He has been on Medi-gold for 6 days (we brought him home and didint quarentine ans he gave a bac infection to our other fish. we were told to treat both of them) Moor now has own 10 gal tank. Been there for a week. Still eats 2.5 inches long without tail. I havent seen him since monday(Idont live with him. He lives with my fiance) asn today I see him for the first time and he has this bloody patch. Please Please Please what do I do? Last water change on tues 20%. Amquel+, aquarium salt, aqarisol, are always used in new water. I have been gradually upping the ph with stuff from the LFS and baking soda over time. Started at 6.8.

Thanks, megan

I didnt know what else to do so I have treated him with maracyn two. I am afraid he has septicemia. I cant figure out what else it could be. My other fish in the other has another bump so hes getting treated too. I hope this will also treat the tanks. I bought 4 moss balls today too. I dont knwo what to do with them. I dont think i can quarentine them in "used water" cause it has the cooties and the med in it. I have stuff to "clean" them, but will the med hurt them once they go in the tank?

Oh, I also ate 4 chocolate cupcakes and have calmed down a little.

Thanks, Megan

HI bug girl, sorry to say I can't help you with the fish, my knowledge of treating illnesses is very limited.
However I can tell you about the moss balls. I didn't disinfect mine. All I did was put them in a tupperware container with tank water put them in the window and changed the water everyother day. I did this for 10 days.

Good luck, I do hope someone helps you with your fish problem.

We checked on him this morning & he's still looking the same. Does anyone have any ideas of what we can do to help our fishie?

Thanks, Megan

I think it may be costia. Here's the treatment for it.

Costia is a parasite that nearly always causes little red hemorrhages, especially under the chin, but also along the back. If the red dots are under the scales, it is more likely to be bacterial.
Costia can be seen at 100X and identified by their very fast altho jerky movement. They are oval with a dent, making them sorta kidney shaped and have two pairs of flagella which arent always easy to see except at higher magnification. Costia can divide every 10 hours at 75-78oF, but die at 86oF. They can divide at low temps, so is already causing a problem in the cold spring problem.
TREATMENT Salt dip to strip the slime coat, treat for 3 days with Quick Cure and then run the temp up to 86oF for 3 days. Slowly lower the temp to normal, 4oF per day.

Thanks, Athena and LaurieP!!

I did a salt dip and started the Quick cure yesterday and no change. I am slowly raising the temp. I took out the filter and put in a new filter cartirage minus the carbon so as to pick up any funky chunkies in the tank. I will do a 30% water change today and add the Quick cure again. His slime coat has always looked normal and he has never had any flashing. all water params are still the same-all good stuff. He is still on medi-gold. The only other thing that is off since he has been with us is he has clamped his fins periodically and hovered in the middle of the tank, stationary(like he is watching TV). Then he would do regular fishie stuff with his fins normal. He kinda does this behavoir cycle all day long. He has done this since we have gotten him and still does it in the new tank. I thought it was because of all the stress from transporting and all the newness. Now he has this red under his chin that is like "V" shaped. its between his gill covers right in the middle, under his chin then goes back in a "V" along the edge of his gill openings on his body. There are no pinpoint spots of red any where and the rest of him looks very normal. I would really appreciate if I could get some more input, I am very scared.

Thanks, Megan

hi. smile.gif

did you start noticing the red marks on its chin before or after you started tweaking the ph?

is the ph from your tapwater 6.8? if so, why are you trying to raise it? a ph of 6.8 isnt too low for goldfish and is actually great if it remains stable.

other than costia and septicemia, i cant think of any other diseases/parasites that would cause this. medi-gold should help if its septicemia. the treatment your giving him should take care of costia.

sorry i cant be of much more help. sad.gif keep us posted on him, ok?

I was told the pH needed to be raised a little on another thread. Thanks so much. I will keep you all posted.

nah. you dont need to mess with your ph at all. as long as its between 6.5 and 8.2ish (and remains stable), theres no need to tweak it any. besides, if you dont fully undrstand ph/gh/kh and their relationships, you shouldnt ever attempt to make changes. wink.gif

not much of worry if your fish is behaving normally, eats normally, o other abnormal sydrome like cloudy eyes or slimy or whatever..

you may quarantine it for good cause.. and provide a lightly salted environment for it.. say 0.1% - 0.2%.. provide air stone and feed lightly.. raise temperature to 78 degrees and keep the fish under observation for next 1 week..

dun use used tank water for the fish, but age water separately to change the water in the Q tank... and dun fiddle with any parameters such as PH or KH or anything...

Im afraid to say it but Mango is all better and perkier than ever. I dont know what it was, but it seems to have resolved. I did the quickcure for three days as the package said, 30% water changes each day and covered him up real good to keep out the light. I didnt QT cause I didnt have another tank and he is the only fish ever to be in that tank and dont know what the diff would be. Anyway his params will be checked daily for a while until Im sure the tank is back to its normal cycled self (minus whatever funky thing was on my Mango). Thank you all for your help. This is a great relief.
