I was visiting my boss's house for a BBQ recently. She had a tank with a few oranda's and one black moor. There were also about a 1/2 dozen of those small blue and red neon fish (about 1/2 inch long ) swimming around.

Is this something that anyone else here practices? She noted that she's had the tank for a year and the fish have all been there that long as well.

I thought neons needed warmer water than goldies. Anyway, I didn't start talking about it much more than observation as I didn't want to offend her..... afterall.. she's my boss!!!! rofl3.gif

Neons and goldfish can be together in same tank, as long as the goldfish isn't too big. They can all living in a tank with temp around 74F.

I would say no,neons shouldn;t be put with goldfish many because of the diets, and also because of the temps. And ill also like to add that neons arn't so hardy i had them in my tropical tank i had about 12 to about 17 and know i only have 2 hmmm ...

Neons are a tropical fish who ideally should have water about 80º. They are one of the most delicate of all the tetras. The extreme amount of waste goldfish create could kill them. They get to be about an inch long as adults and could easily be swallowed by larger goldfish. They are also startled easily and do best in tanks with other small, calm fish. Finally, they do require different food from goldfish. Again, back to the whole tropical vs. goldfish debate, to keep them together would be compromising whats best for each fish and neither would get its optimal care. I really wouldnt recommend mixing the two.

biggrin.gif i have with my two fantails, 4 neons, 4 white cloud minnows, and 4 lemon pencils. Admittedly i have had them only a week but so far so good. They all eat goldfish flakes, tubifex and peas etc. I will be buying tropical flakes and mixing both together. The temperature is about 24 to 25 degrees. To begin with my goldies thought they were food, but now they are used to each other. I have in the past kept tropicals with goldfish for many years without any problems. Once i had a 5" goldfish with a 6"silver shark and an 8" plec with other smaller fish and all lived happily for a number of years. I think its about getting the size of your fish right, obviously the goldfish will grow larger and will have to be moved out but as long as they are not showing signs of aggression i think its okay.

yeh, i wont go for neon and goldfish together.

its a little different for both requirements, different temp, pH levels and diet.
