i know that they arent goldfish, but i bought 2 a few weeks ago and put them in my tank with some orandas a lionhead a ryukin a shubunkin a comet. they all seemed to get on fine. i made it so that the salamanders could get in and out of the water and they loved it. later i bought a weather loach. he seemed to befriend a salamander and stayed with him all the time. i got up the other day and looked for the salamanders (they are my favs!!!) and i could find the one that the loach liked.

i have searched all over the tank and in the gravel but not found him. my tank is covered with no way out so he couldnt have escaped. could the loach have eaten him?

help!?!?!

i miss my salamander cry3.gif

Loaches tend to eat snails, don't they? How big were these salamanders, and how big are your fish?
Black oranda
Most salamanders are great to get out from the tank so
he probly got out some how.
And you shouldn't be putting them with goldfish they should have there own tank.
mini_god
They are about 2 inches long.

I cant see how it could get out...I have a sturdy hood and a plastic condensation tray which i bought so they couldnt escape.

When i bought them I asked if it was ok to put them in with goldfish and they said it was fine but beware because when they get bigger they eat small fish.

I forgot to mention i also have a shoal of 6 mountain minnows.

In the shop the salamanders were in a tank with the minnows.

Well, if your fish can eat something about 2" long, then I'd be sorry to have to say that they probably...did.
Black oranda
sad.gif you still shouldn't be putting them togther pet shops tell mostly lies to just sell stuff and make money, no good information is given....
So Salamanders are a big no no,what type are they?
mini_god

It's possible that your fish ate him. A salamander is a slower moving animal, so the fish might have been picking on him and eventually killed him and ate him overnight. It's very possible. Your salamander may have gotten sick too, and then the fish took over. sad.gif For future reference, don't mix fish and amphibians, or lizards, unless it's something like a frog that can't be eaten cuz it's too big, yet not too big that it can eat the fish. I don't know why they'd tell you that mixing these guys was ok. A lot of petstores unknowingly misinform people due to their own naiveity, or "not knowing". Don't feel bad, just seperate the remaining salamander(s), and I do hope I'm wrong about the fish eating him and he's just hiding really well. My fish ate a pleco yesterday. <_<

Hmmm like i said get a small 5 gallon or 4 gallon or something for them
if you do find them http://www.caudata.org/forum/ thats a good forum for salamanders you could get help there for better care.

regardless of size a salamander should not be in with fish for 2 reasons: it has different diseases and it is a predator of small fish. Salamanders are also surprisingly smart and they very good burrowers and there is a chance it may have discovered a way to squeeze out of the tank, after all it is only 2 inches long.
