Greetings,
If / When do Algae start growing? Is it in the normal tap water or it gets in there by some other means?
My tank is only a week old but should I expect to see any soon?

Its been my experience that the algae will not start growing until the tank is cycled, and even then it may not grow if the light and nutrient conditions are not right.

There are a bunch of benefits of letting algae grow in the tank. First of all, it creates a slippery surface to keep your fish from getting scratched. Second, it's a great food source for your goldies, and lastly, it will help control nitrates in your tank as well as oxygenating the tank during the day.

Yeah Im curious about algie to, I have algie & it seems like alot. I have to clean it off the glass & it makes the water so dirty. Should I leave it on the orniments I have in the tank? & also I have two tanks but they have different colors of alie growing in them. My big tank's majority of algie is dark green, but in my smaller tank it is a dark brown. Any ideas about what this means?

The green algea is healthy it has enough of light and the
brown one if im not mistaken is just because there isn't enough of light
for algea to grow.... You could get an algea eater?

I think a lot of tanks go through a phase during which the algae is out of control--I know mine did. I had green hair all over everything! But it settled down after a month or two and now it's under control. If you do start to have real problems with it, planting the tank and cutting down on the light each day can really help. But like everyone says, a little is good!

this a really good question, thanks for posting! I have a little algae on my main calcium rock, i always thought it was because its right below where the filter water comes down, and i was thinking of scrubbing it off! But seeing as how its good for everyone i'll leave it - i don't mind some 'greens' in my tank...

Algae is actually good for your fish. It is a natural color enhancer because it containes spirulina! B)

The fish department man at my local PetSmart store suggested that I use a product called "Algae Destroyer Liquid." The active ingredient is 2-chlor-4, 6 bis-(ethylamino)-s-triazine. I think that does help. Has anyone else had experience with this product.
