Full Version: Bubble Eye Filter Protector

Hi everyone,

I had difficulty searching for specific ideas for preventing my bubble eye from becoming stuck to the Rio-brand internal filter I have (aka jet filter?). Koko also has the following recommendation btw: http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17635

My other idea is to have large enough holes covering the filter intake (many thanks to my husband who helped me with this idea smile.gif ), so that I don't have to clean the protector as much, yet small enough to prevent the fish from getting too near the filter. I only needed 2 ingredients:
1. A plastic grating easily available from the lsf (cut to size later)

2. Some plastic cable strings

Note how item 1 folds into a curve? I decided to use this original semi-cylinder shape to cover around the filter, leaving about 1cm space around the intake area. After cutting to shape with a plier, I tied several item 2s (3 in my case) on the opposite ends to keep the semi-cilinder shape intact.
I also cut a hole at the front to allow the filter output to protrude (this also keeps the grating in place).
Since the edges can be quite sharp, I put the formation at the corner of the tank, and secured it into place with some rocks+gravel at the ground. It stands on its own anyway (you can easily improve this by adding suction caps somewhere perhaps).

See how she's trying to get injured again - no more burst bubbles this time, Patchie biggrin.gif

But will post more soon if you like smile.gif I've actually taken some mpeg movies of my goldies, and it's hilarious seeing Bubsy's clumsy swimming!! smile.gif I'll put it somewhere here if there's a way of hosting it on kokos heartpump.gif

I'm looking for another bubble eye to accompany her btw...thinking of a black one...hopefully one comes up in a lsf soon rolleyes.gif

Wow, that was a great idea, Kat! Very inventive! I usually use sponges for the intake tubes, but your idea looks so much more sophisticated! heartpump.gif

I do have to say it looks better than mine rofl3.gif

Koko, I was initially following your idea, but couldn't find a basket that fitted the shape of the filter I have. When my lsf showed me the grate, I was delighted that its surface wasn't sharp at all smile.gif I guess this might work for external filter intakes as well, if you don't mind putting the intake tube at the tank corner biggrin.gif

Wow, I also like to see others inventions. I myself don't have a bubble eye, but I can see why you need something.
