I have a fish pond That I made out of a Stainless steel tank,I waited 2 day after I put the water in before I put my fish in.When I did put my fish in they all floated to the top of the water like they were trying to get air,and the next day they all died.I had the fish in my house for 5 years and they were doing good until I put them outside.I also got 12 more fish from Wal=Mart the day before and they also died in the pond outside.I also wanted to ask if coper will hurt the fish because I have coper pipes in the bottom of my fish pond. Thanks for any help you can give.

I had that happen the first time I added fish to my pond, took me several tries to get them to live. I never did figure out what was wrong unless it was the water quality. Can you give us more information on your pond - filtration, pump, water readings, etc? Not sure about the copper pipes.

I've always been told never to use metal in a pond as it can give off many chemicals that can harm the fish. I'd get a kit and test your water before putting anymore fish in it.. Does your pond have something to aerate it and supply oxygen?

I have put mine in a stock tank for temporary use when doing pond work and such and never had any problems. Answer some of the questions above and we can help more.

Did you buy the tank new, or is it possible that something toxic could have been stored in it prior to you putting your fish in. I'm not sure about copper either. I'd say stay away from metal all together. You could put some coats of sealent on the inside of the tank to keep the chemicals out. Make sure the sealent is safe for fish though.

What was the temperature of the water? Being metal, it could really heat up in the sun. Warm water holds much less oxygen then cool water. I have a small pond and I really up the water circulation in the hot weather.

You could line it with a watergarden liner or a regular tarp (that is what I use and have never had problems).

I am a little late too this one but need too tell you that copper is TOXIC to fish. By all means get rid of the copper pipe now. If you need too run pipe use pvc. Check out what divine built using a stock tank on the other thread. That is a much better alternative than stainless steel however I don't think that stainless steel would be bad for fish health. Don't quote me on that one, but you need too take a look at those stock tanks. They are reasonably priced, stronger than you can believe and completely fish safe.
