The store bought ones are pretty cheesy looking. Anyone have any unique ideas for aquarum backings? I was thinking about painting it but what kind do you use so that it doesn't come right off?
Thanks,
Kyle

There are tons of things you can use. One of my tanks has aluminum foil wrinkled up and painted blue. Another has cloth on it. I saw some neat place mats that would have looked cool - they were clear plastic with tropical fish on them. I always thought a mirror would be neat too.

I'd have to say a mirror, I've seen tanks with a mirror behind them and it's awsome B)

jsrtist (i believe) uses acrylic/latex paint to paint her own stuff on the backs of her tanks (at least one that i know of) and she says it works a charm.
ive always liked the idea of getting a picture of a lunar landscape or one of the images from hubble blown up (or stretched) to the size of a tank. you could then get it laminated. once laminated, you can apply it to the back of the tank with a small decal squeegee and some spray adhesive for some stunning results in clarity. believe you me, the spray adhesive makes such a huge difference.
anyway, whatever you decide to do, good luck and have fun!

It does indeed; that's what I use to fix the plastic backgrounds to my tanks and there's never a problem with air bubbles or water seeping down and runing them.

my 40gal stretch hex uses the room's wood panaling and the effect is excellent. unfortunately my 46gal bow is up against a whitish wall and therefore needed a background. i used the black/blue progressive photofinish background that is available at the local Petco. match that with black rocks, life like greenry, a gothic white castle decoration and strikingly bright goldfish and you have a really cool tank.
the two tanks are very different. one appears as a peaceful community located in the bottoms of a clear lake. the other appears as a dark ages recreation with mythical creatures swimming in and out of the shadows.

the mirror idea sounds really neat, but how would u attach it to the back of the tank?

go down to your local mirror and glass co and tell them what you are doing. they might be able to suggest an attachment method as well as make the thing for you.

Hot glue or some heavy tape (duck tape) on the top where you can't see it. If you have a filter that hangs over the back it will help hold it up too.
