Difference between green and brown algae?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's the difference between brown algae and green algae? What makes them one colour or the other? In my 10 gal. tank there is only bright green algae while in my 20 gal. there is only brown algae...why is this? Thanks!

Green algae is a true algae, and brown algae is a lower form not real algae. That is why green is beneficial, and brown isn't(Green gets rid of nitrate, brown doesn't). If you have intense enough lighting you will develop green algae (thats why sometimes if its on to long you get green water). It has to be over 1 watt per gallon of water lighting to get green. Brown algae grows when there is not enough light (thats why it seems to be more common since most people don't have intense enough lighting.). Niether are bad for your fish, they just make your tanks ugly. I have brown in all my tanks, and i just try to keep it scraped off.
Hope that helps.
