1. yes you do need live plants for the fish to lay their eggs in, they should be bushy plants too.
2. the ph depends on what fish they are. if you have normal g/f they can thrive in a relitavely high ph but shubs are more picky.
3. ideally the fish should be 3 years+ to breed. they might try before this but they are not sexually mature and will not have any luck.
