Firstly do an immediate water change of 30% as this sounds like a water quality problem to me. Get yourself a test kit (ammmonia, nitrite, nitrate) and test your water parameters. Ammonia should be 0, nitrite 0 an dnitrate under 20. If the levels are higher than this you will need to do daily water changes of 30% until they get back down to where they should be. Until you get your test kit do water changes of 30% daily just to be on the safe side.

Do the red patches look like bruising under the skin or does it look like it's on the surface?

The patches could be ammonia or nitrite burns so you need to get your water quality good. Your tank is probably still cycling so you are experiencing spikes of ammonia and nitrite which are toxic to your fish and need to be diluted in order for them to survive. Read up on the cycling process (the nitrogen cycle) and familiarise yourself with it the you will know what you are dealing with.

thank you for your reply, the red patches look like bruises under the skin. we will do water changes and get a test kit as you suggest. we use tap water is that ok?

How big of a tank is it and what are you useing for filtration? If you have city water you need to be adding something to remove chlorine as it will kill fish.

Tap water is fine as long as you add a dechlorinator such as Aquasafe. If the red patches are under the skin then your fish could have septicimia. This is often caused by the fish getting a small injury such as a tear in it's fin or something, which allows bacteria from water which isn't of very good quality enter the blood stream. Get yourself a good anti-internal bacteria medication as soon as oyu can and treat with that. Interpet make a good one but I think it's hard to get hold of in the US. I'm in the Uk so can't recommend any meds there. Perhaps someone here can suggst something? If not then ask your lfs to recommend one.
