HELP!!! Bo's belly is really big, scary big. This is the second day giving him frozen daphnia, and still no poop. He's bigger tonight than he was this morning, even. I was going to try salting his water, too. But he's only in a 1 gallon tank with no filter. I didn't know if that would be safe. I don't want to lose him, what do I do now?? boom.gif

okay, salting him in a one gallon container with no filter is okay aslong as you dont put to much i put maybe a quarter of a tespoon in when needed and i always clean out the tank/bowl in about two days just to make sure that he doesnt rot in that. other than that i dont know what to tell you i have never heard of a fish getting that big like that hope everything gets better for you sad.gif

Well, I think he's constipated. I had started a thread when I noticed him looking like he had a full belly. At the time, I thought it would pass. I fasted, gave a pea, fasted, another pea. Then I tried a tuna and pea paste that someone suggested. None of that worked, so I picked up some frozen daphnia. They say they work as a laxitive. He's had those for 2 days and, nothing. In fact he's getting bigger! I just don't know what to do, if salt would even help. The only thing I've had to treat for is finrot from those death cups at the pet store ( and my own neglegence at first) , so I'm lost! I think I've done the obvious thing to do first with the fasting and the peas, ect. But what next?

I'm sorry to hear that Bo's problems have continued...That's not a good thing,as you know by now. I would definately try the daphnia, and I ,at this point think that I would have to try the salt--I don't think you have too many options left. There was a thread a little while back(month maybe?) Nykole started it about one of her betta's being sick if I'm not mistaken-tried to find it-missed it somehow--Anyway,there was talk about using salt in that thread-not everyone was agreeing on that-I don't recall off hand the final results, but in that they talked of salt taking some of the bloatedness away. I feel helpless here because I don't know 100% what to tell you to do,but I also can't stand here watching Bo get worse...I will try to find more info for you-Emma is good with salt amts.--If I recall,Toothy mentioned salt in your other post-He is pretty knowledgeable, and what he doesn't know,he makes up for by researching...He spends alot of time researching info for people that need help.. All I can tell you is keep Bo's water pristene-get the daphnia, and start reading old posts til we can get more help in here! 00001649.gif

I think the link Sharon wanted for you is the one started by toothless. There is alot of info on salt baths/salting water in it.

Here it is thread by toothless

(THe thread ny Kikole was mainly about feeding and amounts(If it's the one I think it is)

If you want it - I'll post it for you!

Sharon,

I'm with you!!!

I just happened to remember the thread & I did a search by member for Nykole & was like blink.gif

I really appreciate your concern, devs. And I hope you had a good 4th, all of you!! Myself, I was stuck at work, waitresses don't get many fun days off!! <_<
I think read that thread that you posted a link to, Jen. Though I think I could use to read it again, so thank you. As for what "toothy" posted on my thread, I think he was talking about epsoms salts. And he wasn't sure of the dosage. So if anyone can come up with the correct dosage, I think I would like to try to use those. ( Bo is in a 1 gallon tank) It just seems the epsoms would be better than regular aquarium salt for drawing out fluid.
And for a small update... Bo did poop a little green today. VERY small amount, but it's the fist poop in almost a week! So, at least a little pea made it through his digestive tract. He's still huge, but hasn't gotten any bigger today. Yesterday it real scary, he really ballooned over the course of the day it seemed. So, no change really. The poop today gave me gleam of hope that he could be ok in the end. I keep having flash backs of "toothy's" Willie who ended up having a tumor!
So, do I do aquarium salt or epsoms? I guess that's my big question. I'm still a real newbie here, even opinions help!
fisharenewtome
I'm also a newbie but I'm really hunting for Sharon right now & so far am finding that many sites prefer epsom for treating body swelling (I'm getting this from the dropsy sections but I would think the same logic would apply to abdominal bloat for other reasons)

Here's a quote from bettadreams.com

What to do? First EPSOM salt, at a rate of 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons, which should help alleviate the swelling a bit. Why epsom salt instead of other salts? Because the fish can't remove the sodium from it's own body...you add sodium to the water and it increases the problem. Epsom salt is made with magnesium, not sodium.

Don't know if it is correct or not (haven't tried it myself but you said any opinions... blink.gif )

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!

Thank you! Yes, I trust your opinions here. So 1 tsp per 5 gal, so about a 1/5 tsp per gallon, yes? Ok, the smallest tsp I've got messures 1/8 so I've got imprivise a bit. That's ok, I think I can handle that! Thank you, I appreciate it. I'll let you all know how it goes. I'll get the epsoms tomorrow and try it.
Oh, how do I go about adding the epsoms to the water?
fisharenewtome
I'm not sure about epsom salt, but I added aquarium salt to my tank with the last water change/gravel vac.

I just dissolved it in a gal of water (actually several gallons just 1gal at a time-but the tank I am currently treating is a 38 gal so I needed alot of salt!). I made sure to have it completely dissolved in the bucket before I addded it to the tank.

(I know I have read on here where people couldn't get the salt to dissolve & then figuered they were trying to dissolve too much salt in too little water (the water only holds so much salt & then it can't hold any more so no more will dissovle in that water) - I am tired - I have no idea where I saw this - but I know I did)

I hope this helps!

I hope I am making some kind of sense! (I have to go to bed now!)

I hope your little guy gets better soonest!!

Jenn

yawn.gif Well hon when I got on puter today,it was originally to help you out with Bo---little did I know that I'd be looking for answers for both of us. It's been a hellish kind of day! Jen is rightyou need 1 tsp.Epsom salt per 5 gals. The fact that you saw any kind of green poop was a big plus for you hon, that's a good sign. As for me,I don't know....I may have caught my little girl's problems a little too late..I pray that she makes it thru the nite and hangs in there for me. Iknow to keep Epsom Salt in the house at all times-did have some don't know what I did with it-It's been a while-used it/threw it out? sad.gif Who knows..... Hopefully I can get an early start tomorrow and get to the pet store. I'm tired myself...been up since about 3am Yesterday morning...
abby'smom
Gees, girl, get some sleep!!!! 3am yesterday! Elizabeth needs you to be rested to make her well again! I understand, though. I was on here till almost 3 am yesterday morning( I was probably gong to bed when you were geting up!) looking for posible answers and cures for Bo. But I didn't find any dosage for epsoms salts like you guys did. Thanks a million! Again!!
And again, good luck with you girlie!
abby'smom
Update: By now, I don't think the daphnia are working. Bo has had a string of clear poop going for a couple days now. And he looks like he's still getting bigger. I haven't done the epsoms bath yet because I forgot to ask the most critical question! wall.gif How long do I leave him in the solution?
Oh and I have some Jungle fungus clear that says it treats for dropsy. Do you think that would do anything for him? He's not really pine coning right now. Though with as big as he is, I'm shocked at that.
Fishmerised
Hi, look I really don't know but have you considered an internal infection? Perhaps some medicated food would help. Good Luck, Annette
Devs
Erin go back and read Elizabeths thread where toothy talked about antibiotic-heat etc. usually when you see that stringy clear poop-it s probably due to infection-I think that if I would have had Maracyn and Maracyn II,Elizabeth may have done better.......When I found mARACYN-IT WAS TOO LATE....
abby'smom
Hey, Sharon. I don't know if you happened to see the new thread I started, but I noticed last night he was pine coning. So I put him in the epsom bath right away. for about 1/2 an hour. I don't how I missed it during his water change yesterday, but I did. In the mean time, all I had was fungus clear so I added some to his tank. It said it treats for dropsy and pine coning, so I gave it a shot. After the 4 days, if he's still hanging in there, I'll get the Maracyn. I left his light on last night too, to keep him warmer. So we'll see how it goes and keep my fingers crossed.
