Hi, I bought this cool looking driftwood (real not plastic or anything), I pre soaked it for god knows how long, till the water stopped turning brown and I placed in my tank about a month ago. When I pulled it out today to attach some java fern to it, it smelled like it is rotting or something, the tank doesn't smell, but the driftwood does. Is this O.K or should I just throw it out?

i would say that its pretty normal. in fact, it is rotting! dont worry though, any ammonia released from it is quickly removed by your bio-filter. ive got a small peice of driftwood in one of my tanks and its been submerged for about 5 years! it too, doesnt have a very pleasant odor. but, its more of an earthy rotting, not totally putrid or anything.

Thanks Paul,

I just finished attaching about 7 small (I broke up a cluster) of java fern to the driftwood, and why did I think it's going to be easy unsure.gif, man that's hard work biggrin.gif but I think it turned out good.

I will surely try to get some pics, my digital camera seem to be on the fritz (surprise surprise rolleyes.gif ) I think I will let it grow on the log first then take the picture, so I can remove all the strings, right now it looks like a mummy biggrin.gif
