I'm trying to figure out which filter to buy for my 55 gal.
I want a canister, and I've been looking at Fluval. Which one would you guys reccomend? Would you reccomend a different brand?
Fluval 304- Output: 260 U.S.g.
Fluval 404- Output: 340 U.S.g.

I think that the Rena Filstar xp3 (350 gph ~100 bucks online) is generally rated higher than the fluvals. For goldies I think I would get that and an Aquaclear 300 or 500.
If money isn't an issue, very few people are ever unhappy with Eheim canisters.

I would go with the 404, I personally dont like the Fluvals, but if you do go with them I would get the 404 then also have a HOB filter this way when you clean on the other is running as a back up

I've heard great things about the Rena canister filters. Very easy to work with. Just what I've heard.

I have rena xp3 and a fluval 304 and 404. I like the rena xp3 better, personally I find it easier to clean (easier to open, and restart)

I wasn't dead-set on the fluval by any means, that's just what someone told me thy liked, so i looked into them. iI think I'll look into the rena ones, then!

Well if your looking and can efford it, and plan on having this tank or fish for a long time. Look into the Eheims Great Canisters

i second that for Ehleim. if money is no object then go that route. i don't own one as of yet, but when i purchase my 55-75 gal tank, that is the filter i will buy.

Eheims are great (I owe the Eheim Pro) but Rena XP3 (I own 2) is very close and much cheaper. If I was in the market for a canister today, although I have not had any problems with my Eheim, I would definitely go with an XP3. In any event you cant go wrong with either one.

B) I would skip the canisters and get two Emperor 400's. Try Big Al's, this is a great place to get this filter at a fraction of the cost at retail stores. And you'll get 800 gph. And they are very easy to care for.
